

G. Kenneth Holmes, passed away peacefully at home on October 28, 2016 at the age of 86. He was born in Halifax to the late Francis (Frank) W. and Gertrude May Holmes. Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, and was a true gentleman and friend.
In the 1950's Ken was one of the original graduates of the Registered Industrial Accountant Program. Ken was instrumental in raising awareness of the RIA program with accounting students by lecturing for several years about its benefits.
He served as president for the Society of Industrial Accountants of Nova Scotia from 1970-1971. He was a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Nova Scotia earning the FCPA-CPA designation. He was a member of Fairview Freemasons #126, as well as the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and served as Grand Master for the 1st Halifax City District in 1995. Ken was also a member of the Philae Shriners of Halifax and was proud to serve in the Scooter Patrol.
Ken always loved pulling a trailer to take the family camping, and in later years spent many winters in Florida with friends.
He is survived by his loving wife Mona; daughter, Sandra Shute, Halifax; son, Scott, Alberta; daughter, Anne (Michael) Gatto, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Ryan, Heidi, Erin and Jason; great-grandchildren, Parker and Hunter. He was predeceased by his sister Frances O’Flaherty.
A Masonic service immediately followed by a memorial service will be held at Hope United Church, 3055 Connaught Ave., Halifax on Wednesday November 2nd at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ken's memory to the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation of Canada (SRCF) Learning Centre for Halifax Inc., or Hope United Church.
