Born in Waterville, Kings County, on January 11, 1933, to Frederick Russell and Inez Nora (Lenihan) Mahaney.
George grew up in Kentville where his love of sports began. George played hockey throughout his youth, eventually becoming both a well-known player and referee in the Atlantic region. He was also a coach and mentor for numerous teams in both Jr. A and Jr. B hockey, most notably with the Halifax Jr. A Lions of the MVJHL.
George was a longtime salesman with Scotia Chev and Bob MacDonald’s Chevrolet, Halifax. He also had a great love of harness racing.
George is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Crosbie) Halifax; daughter, Cheryl (Allen Iyoupe) Blockhouse; son, Tom (Karen) Hammonds Plains; brothers, Gerald (Judy) Kentville; Wayne (Dorothy), Robert (Elsie) North Alton; sisters, Linda Lonergan, Coldbrook and Judy (Tom) Keddy, New Minas. Numerous nieces and nephews. Loving Papa to his grandchildren Leanne, Haley, Thomas, Jacob, Tori and Alexis, whom he loved with all of his heart and soul.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Joyce Esposito, Troy, NY; brother-in-law, Verne Lonergan. Cremation has taken place.
There will be a celebration of his life at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, Wednesday, August 31, 2016, from 2-4 pm.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Lynn Key and her staff at Heart to Heart Manor, Chester Basin. The love and compassionate care given to George will never be forgotten.
