George Vassilakis

Vassilakis, George - 71, of Halifax passed away peacefully Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the Victoria General Hospital after a courageous struggle with cancer. Born in Episkopi, Crete, he was the son of the late Manolis and Argiro (Stavroulakis) Vassilakis. George was married in Germany on April 27, 1963 to Hariklia (Trigonis) and they immigrated to Canada together in 1967. An avid hunter and fisherman, George enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with friends. He was a dedicated employee at Canada Post where he worked as a machinist, retiring after 22 years.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Hariklia; Godsons Thomas Tsavos (Halifax), John Demestihas (Halifax), Louis Tsadilas (Athens) and Manolis Trigonis (Iraklion); brothers Stavros and Kostas (Episkopi) many nieces and nephews and his extended community of friends including the many children who called him “Nono”.

Visitation will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. Funeral service will be held at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 38 Purcell’s Cove Road in Halifax on Thursday, March 24th at 2:00pm with Father Panagiotis (Peter) Maropoulos officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Episkopi, Crete.
