Gerald Joseph KELLY

April 17, 1929November 17, 2020

KELLY, Gerald Joseph, 91 passed away Tuesday the 17th day of November 2020 peacefully at Maplestone Enhanced Care in Halifax Nova Scotia. GOD took Gerald home, it was his will. Gerald was able to leave behind his pain and transcend his earthly form to join Clarisse, his loving wife of over 55 years. Many of us will mourn but no one will ever know the loneliness Gerald has carried since Clarisse’s passing in January 2008. “Together in Heaven they will be.” Their Love was their life that was forever.

Born in Halifax the the son of the late John and Mary (Walsh) Kelly. Gerald was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his sisters, Grace (Dobson), Kathleen (Levandier), Mary (Kelly), and Barbara (Mombourquette), and brothers, Edward, Frank, Claude, Johnnie, Jackie, and Celestine. Gerald is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends. Gerald’s proudest accomplishment was his children, Denis, Paula (Doug Brown) and Timothy, his cherished Grandchildren, Lindsay (Shane) Parr, Conor (John) Gillis, Brianne Kelly, and Katie Kelly, Great Granddaughters, Kasey Anne Parr, Nova Lea Kelly and Great Grandson, Silas Kelly.

Gerald was a member of the Halifax Fire Department having retired after 35 years with an exemplary career. He was the recipient of numerous Awards for Excellence over his career. During Gerald’s “off duty hours” he along with his brother Celestine ran a successful trucking business throughout the Metro area. Gerald was a devoted Catholic and he and his family attended Saint Patrick’s Church and later attended St. Agnes Church for over 55 years where the Catholic faith carried him throughout life.

Together with his religious belief, along with his strong belief in the unity of family, Gerald was a loving father and a constant pillar of support to all family members. If ever you required support, Gerald was willing to help and continued to do so until you were able to stand alone. To quote a passage given by a dear family member, during Gerald and Clarisse’s celebration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary he said. “They have always been very willing to share whatever they have with their family and friends. I know that all of us will recall occasions when Gerald has gone out of his way to help us. Gerald has been like the Godfather to his family and friends, always there to lend a hand, whether it be financial or moral support, he was always there to make life better for all of us.” Gerald always gave of himself to help others. “Never to be forgotten”

We would like to thank and express our appreciation for the love and compassionate care given on a daily basis to our father Gerald, in his later years by the staff and members of Maplestone Enhanced Care (Hale Hall). To our Aunt, Ruby Theriault, we thank you for your devotion to Gerald. Only by your kindness and attention to Gerald’s needs was he able to remain in his home for as long as he did. To Gill Rousseau, and Mike Rodgers, life time friends and neighbour, we thank you.

Those whom we have Loved

Never really leave us

They live on Forever in our hearts,

and cast their radiant light onto

our every shadow

So sorry to hear of Gerald's passing. I happened to be looking through some pictures from my Mother's (Elsie) old photo albums and there were some of Gerald and Aunt Clarisse. I remember Gerald from many years ago as a gent with a great sense of humor.

This was hard news to hear as Uncle Gerald was a beacon of strength to look up to in my youth. As an adult he became a great friend whom I cherished. RIP Uncle Gerald.

My deepest sympathy in the passing of your Dad. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I and my late husband, Gerald (Jerry) lived upstairs on London Street in the early 70's. Clarisse and Gerald were very good to us.

Uncle Gerald and Aunty Clarisse always made me feel so special. I remember laughter and lots of it whenever we were all together. I can’t explain this kind of togetherness but it’s truly unforgettable . Knowing that they are together once more in heaven warms my heart. I share in the sadness that the family is feeling and send my love to you all. Cousin Cheryl , husband Bill and family xx
