Gladys Shirley Durdle

September 4, 1929September 1, 2019

It is with deep sadness that the family of Gladys Shirley (Murrant) Durdle announce her passing on September 1, 2019 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, just days shy of her 90th birthday.

Gladys was born on September 4, 1929 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to Archibald and Elizabeth Murrant, and grew up in Port Morien. She graduated from Nova Scotia Normal College in 1948. In 1952 Gladys married Leonard Durdle and moved to New Waterford where they raised their six children. For the past five years, Gladys and Len lived in Halifax at the Shannex in Clayton Park.

Gladys’ teaching career continued for over thirty-five years. Upon retirement, Gladys and Len moved to River Ryan where they enjoyed gardening and spending time in their yard. Gladys also enjoyed skating and was an avid painter. In retirement, she and Len spent many hours in the workshop creating hand painted treasures which adorn family and friends’ homes. Above all, the time with her family, especially summers at their cabin in Point Michaud, were the most cherished. She was a member of Calvin United Church in New Waterford.

Her children remember her as a kind and dedicated mother who always put her family first. The “home” Gladys created with her husband Len, continued to be a haven for all of her children and grandchildren long after they were empty nesters. Where Len and Gladys were, was home--a place of laughter, security, warmth and friendship.

Gladys is survived by her husband Leonard, her children Donna Lee Coady (David, deceased), Alan Durdle (Cathy), Eva Doell (Brad), Lorna Durdle (Greg Danchuk) and Rhona Reynen (Gordon), her siblings Margie MacKillop (Kenneth), Sylvia Manton (Bill) and Janice Murrant. She was preceded in death by her son George and her brother Bert.

Gladys had a large loving family, grandchildren included; Jacqueline, Gillian, Mitchell, Len, David, Andrew and Nolan and great grandchildren; Ayanna, Anica, Harrison, Lyla, Braedyn and Harper as well as many special nieces and nephews.

Cremation will take place followed by a celebration of life for family members. Burial will take place at a later date at Union Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia at http://alzheimer.ca/en/ns

Dear Durdle’s and extended family:
You did a wonderful job sending your Mom off. Thank you for giving me the joy of being part of her celebration of life. With the help of Rev. Russell I remembered that Gladys was beautiful on the inside and out. Of seeing the attractive lady when I was a kid and asking my Mom if she was an “Eatons Model”. It reminded me of through a kind deed of my fathers that our families have stayed connected over 60 years and that stories from your father has kept my father’s memory alive. Hugs to all of you.

Hi Lorna,
It's been a long time since we've had connect and I'm sorry that it has to be under this circumstance. I just read your Mom's obituary and heard about her wonderful family life. My family and I were fortunate to have met her and to have spend a weekend at your family cottage in Point Michaud, a beautiful spot. My condolences to you and your family.

My condolences to Margie and Janice on Gladys's passing. This picture posted reminds me so much of a picture I have of my mom Ella Murrant. I can see a likeness for sure! My dad Cleve passed on Sept. 1 2008 so it is a day that is special for me too.

We were so saddened to hear the news of Gladys’ passing . She was a gem....a kind , humorous, & loving lady ! Fred of course grew up “ a jump of the fence away” and often recalls his childhood days spent at the Durdle’s.
Being at Gladys and Len’s was “just like being at home”.
Gladys’ generosity was evident the moment you walked through her door. At our last visit, even through her illness, she insisted we not leave without a few chocolate bars for the road !
Len , Donna, Alan & Cathy , Lorna & Greg, Eva & Brad, Rhona & Gord, and your families, please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your dearest Gladys. Prayerful blessings , Fred and Brenda MacEachern
