Adopted as an infant, into a family of seven adopted siblings, Gregory grew up in Armdale and eventually on Larch Street in Halifax. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas School, St. Pat’s High School and Dartmouth Regional Vocational School before taking a position with St. Mary’s University, where he worked for over 40 years.
Gregory had the most optimistic outlook on life, and even under adversity had a sparkle in his eye’s and was quick to offer a related joke, a story, or a smile. He found great pleasure in whatever he was doing at the time whether watching WWE at the Forum, collecting coins, or just visiting with family or friends. He was known for his jovial, outgoing and friendly approach to family, friends and co-workers and especially looked forward to Reardon family gatherings where he could re-connect with his many cousins and other relatives. His commitment to family extended to living with, and caring for, his aging father for years, even while he also struggled with his own health issues. While living in his father’s College Street home, he grew especially fond of the downtown area and its simple pleasures. He loved to stroll and chat with his father and friends on Spring Garden Road, or while enjoying the sunshine at Victoria Park and the Public Gardens.
Gregory chose to leave this life on his own terms as he felt ready to move on to a new adventure. In doing so, we have lost one of the truly gentle and kind souls in this world, who, in his last moments, was only concerned with what he could still do for others.
Gregory was predeceased by his father and mother, brother Danny and sister Elizabeth (Betty) Reardon Smith. He is survived by his birth mother Marjory (Marge) Doucette, sisters Jasmine Doucette, Joanne Weber; and brother Basil, as well as sisters Nancy MacKenzie and Elaine Coyle. He wished to extend his thanks to Krista and Leonard for their close friendship, to Carol for her on-going support over the past few years, and to the staff at the Halifax Infirmary 6.1 and 6.2. who cared for him over the past few months.
Donations can be made in Gregory’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Kidney Foundation. (see links below)
