

The death of Harriet Grace Elizabeth Lovely occurred on March 19, 2015 at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home in Halifax. Harriet was born in Antigonish, NS in 1932 and was the daughter of the late Catherine and Jerry McLean. Harriet is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Frank Lovely; sons, Dr. Gregory (Julie) Lovely, Margaree, NS; Dr. Douglas Lovely, Vancouver, BC; daughter Kimberly (Michael) Sampson, Bedford , New Hampshire; sister, Joan Shepherd, Halifax; brother, Charles McLean, Penticton, BC; grandsons, Adam, Scot, Alexander, Jeffrey and Michael; and granddaughters Kathryn and Claire.
Harriet graduated from Oxford High School and Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, as a Registered Nurse. She was the recipient of a bursary and attended the University of Toronto, where she received a Diploma in Nursing Education. Upon graduation from the University of Toronto, she returned to Halifax and taught surgical nursing at the Victoria General Hospital for a number of years where she later worked part time. Harriet served on the executive of the Victoria General Hospital Alumni and as its President. Harriet attended Mount Saint Vincent University where she took Museum Studies and then worked as a volunteer teacher at The Museum of Natural History in Halifax.
Harriet enjoyed living in Ann Arbor, Michigan when Frank took Graduate Studies and in Loma Linda, California, San Antonio and Dallas, Texas where he did Sabbatical Studies. In all locations she quickly got involved as a volunteer nurse and in the Episcopal Church.
Harriet attended and received a Diploma in Surgical Nursing for Osseointegration in Implant Surgery in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Harriet enjoyed travelling with Frank as he attended professional meetings throughout Canada, USA and Europe. She accompanied Frank to India where he lectured and did volunteer Maxillofacial Surgery.
Harriet was an enthusiastic skier and was a Limited Partner of Wentworth Development Company. Harriet curled for a number of years at the Halifax Curling Club. She was a member of The Waegwoltic Club for over 50 years, a member of The Shortt’s Lake Yacht Club as well as The Shortt’s Lake Tennis Club. Harriet worked as a volunteer at the IWK Hospital and the Kermesse for many years. She played with the IWK fundraiser day and evening bridge groups. She was a member of the Dalhousie-Kings Reading Club for over 40 years and served as its President.
Harriet was devoted to her Church, The Cathedral Church of All Saints (Halifax), where she served on the Congregational Council, The Regional Council, The Sanctuary Guild and the Needlepoint Group.
The family wish to sincerely thank all the caring staff of Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home where Harriet resided for the past five and a half years. Likewise, family want to thank their many friends who continued to visit Harriet and support Frank, especially Sheila Tregunno and Jacqueline Eisner during Harriet’s 12 year journey with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Funeral will take place at The Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Martello St., Halifax, on Saturday, April 25 at 11:00 a.m., with internment at All Saints Columbarium. Visitation and reception following the funeral. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Frank and Harriet Lovely Endowment Fund for the Cathedral Church of All Saints (Halifax, NS) or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
