With great sadness the family of Scottie O’Neill wish to announce her passing
on January 24, 2020 in Halifax. Scottie was an amazing wife, mother, mother-inlaw,
nana, great nana, sister, aunt, and friend of many. Scottie was predeceased
by her husband of 56 years, Tom O’Neill.
She was born in Wallace, Nova Scotia, on October 9, 1928, and she was the
daughter of the late George and Delina Scott. Besides her parents and husband
she was predeceased by brothers William, Henry and Herbert; and sisters Ellen,
Delina and Elsie.
Scottie was a graduate of the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing, St. Michael’s
Hospital in Toronto, operating room program. She graduated from Mount Saint
Vincent University with a Bachelor of Arts and the Atlantic School of Theology
with a Masters of Divinity. In 1998, she was made an Associate of the Atlantic
School of Theology in recognition of her outstanding service to the life and work
of the school. She ministered in the Pastoral Care Department of the IWK Health
Centre for several years. She was a member of Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish
and served on several committees, especially the Liturgy Committee for many
years. She was a member of the Catholic Woman’s League.
Scottie was a member of the Halifax Curling Club, the Waegwoltic Club and
Gyrette Club of Halifax. She was one of the founding members of the Hubbards
Yacht Club and served in many different capacities including Commodore. She
loved to sail, she also enjoyed bowling, horseback riding in her youth and she
was a great dancer. Scottie was a ferocious reader and enjoyed participating in
a book club during the last few decades.
Scottie and family spent many summers in Hubbards where she juggled the
schedules of seven children, coaching, encouraging and occasionally refereeing
a busy family. Most of all she was an amazing Mom, she was always there for
us. She gave us freedom to learn and grow, make mistakes, which we did in
abundance, but was always there to pick us up and cheer us on. She was our
hero.
Scottie’s grandchildren were a constant source of pride and joy to her and she
was a loving, encouraging and sometimes spoiling Nana to all of them.
According to them, Nana always had lots of “kid friendly food”.
She is survived by her children Thomas (Christine) and their children Caitlin,
Tristan, Ariadne, Liam (Susie and their daughter Ava); John (Elaine) their sons
William (Kendra and their son Cormac) and Patrick; Judy (Tim) and their children
Scott (Jessica and their daughter Joey), Jeffrey (Janis and their children Zoe and
Andrew), Sarah (Geoffrey and their children Briar and Samson); Dan (Michele);
Nancy and her daughter Elizabeth (Jason and their children Anne Marie and
Wesley); Shaun (Carolyn) sons Sheamus and Riley and the boys mother
Marlene; and James. As well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She was
also the best Nana to many grand dogs and cats.
The family would like to thank all those who cared for Scottie during her illness
both at home and in care. A special thank you to the staff of Ringdale court at
Maplestone Enhanced Care for their gracious, kind, loving care extended to
Mom and her family over the last three years.
Visitation will be at the J.A.Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive on
Wednesday, January 29, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral mass will be held at Saint
Thomas Aquinas Church on Thursday, January 30 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers
donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of
your choice.
