With great sadness the family of James (Jimmy) McGillivray Gillis of Halifax announce the passing of their Dad, Brother, Uncle, Opa, and friend to so many who knew and loved him.
Born Halifax, August 24, 1938, coming from a very large Cape Breton family he leaves to mourn: his daughters, Carol Gillis, Michelle (Tom) Gray, Debbie (Eddy) Arab, Susan Caldwell, Kathy (Steve) Deagle, all of Halifax; Stepchildren, Tammy and Steven of Port Elgin; Sisters ,Marian, Lee, Ave, Betty, and Monica (All of Flordia), Donna (Dartmouth), Mary Jane (Chester), Hughena of Halifax, Brother Neil and Ronnie (Halifax), John Hugh (California); 14 Grandchildren, and 12 Great Grandchildren.
Predeceased by Mother Elizabeth (Wells) and Father Hugh Gillis of Cape Breton; Wife Sandra (Port Elgin, NB); Brothers, (Twin)Thomas and Michael; Sisters Jane, Joan, Theresa, and Nora .
Jimmy, after an early boxing career, worked most of his adult life as a well-known waiter at Old Lighthouse Tavern, Gingers and the Seahorse Tavern before realizing his dream of his own pub, J.J’s in Port Elgin NB. He spent the last few years (afflicted with dementia) at Parkstone Residence in Halifax.
Many thanks to the wonderful staff that came to know and love him and make his last years easier.
