Jim was born on August 5th, 1965 and was the first of four boys to Diane(Kedy) and Basil Hughes.
He was a busy little boy who displayed a talent for painting at an early age, including the inside of his Mom & Dad's home with a spoon and a bucket of pink paint. With his brother David as his co-conspirator, they even painted the dog, who they thought would look good in that colour as well. This early talent would lead to a successful and longstanding career with Colonial Honda beginning in 1983, eventually becoming a professional body man, a position he held with great pride until his recent illness.
He displayed a beautiful smile, loved fiercely, yet quietly, and if you were his, he was always there for you. He also possessed a wonderful sense of humour and prided himself on his quick wit.
Jim liked all things outdoors and pretty much all sports, whether it was fishing and hunting(a pastime he shared with his brother Robert with whom he shared a special bond), to playing organized team ball and hockey until a few years ago. He excelled at pretty much anything he tried. He was a team player, but could also comfortably beat to his own drum. He and his dear wife Ruth loved to travel, camp, enjoy annual music festivals as well as tropical vacations too numerous to count. They loved to create memories, and often dragged along others to enjoy the experience.
Jim also loved racing. He was a fan of F1, stock car racing, and had a passion for helping local race teams as a valued crew member over the years, including that of his nephew Owen and Brother-in Law Daryl. There was nothing about a car that he couldn't fix, period, which is why he was on speed dial for so many. His name should have been Jack!
But most of all, Jim's biggest passion was his family. He adored his wife Ruth, his kids and his beautiful grandkids. He was so proud of Amanda and Zachary, and revelled in their successes and accomplishments, and was always there for their struggles with sage advice and unwavering support. Grampy Jimmy played a special role in the lives of his grandchildren Sophia and Liam, and the time spent and the look of happiness and joy on his face when with them, spoke volumes.
Jim was ours and we were his, and he leaves an indelible stamp on the lives of so many. He will forever shine bright like the diamond that he was.
Jim is survived by his wife Ruth; his children Amanda(Shawn)Brown, Zachary Hughes and grandchildren Sophia and Liam Brown; mother Diane Hughes; brothers David(Vickey), Robert(Jodi), and Glen(Jennifer); nephews Chad, Owen and Garion and niece Tabitha; Mother-in-Law Anne Halliday; Sister-in-Law Sue(Daryl)Mahar; uncles Stuart(June)Hughes, Art Kedy; aunts Violet Pettipas, Lillian Fraser, Charlene Kedy; Great Great Aunt Evelyn(Gary) Schnare; cousin/chosen brother Brad(Arlene)Schnare, and many more cousins too numerous to mention. He also leaves behind his special fur babies Hemi and Oscar, who will miss his warmth, love and calm nature.
Jim was pre-deceased by his father Basil, uncles William(Billy)Hughes and Clyde Kedy, father-in-law Ralph Halliday, and grandparents Basil & Olive Hughes, and Eva and Ronald Kedy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity that is meaningful to you, as he was always ready to help anyone in need.
Cremation will take place, and a visitation will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax from 5-8pm on Thursday, September 18th. Come as you are, with your stories and memories of Jimmy to share.
