Of Halifax, age 85, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2023. Born in Halifax on January 8, 1938, he was the eldest son of Roger and Marion (Ramey) MacDonald. Jim spent his working years at Hiseler’s Ltd. and enjoyed a long retirement summering at the Ponhook cottage and wintering in Florida. He enjoyed conversation with anyone – or any dog. Never one to sit still, Jim managed his rental properties, drove a tow truck in his younger years and could fix just about anything. He loved all things with motors and kept a busy garage where things were put in a ‘good junk’ box before the thought of ever being thrown out. Jim loved talking about, taking care of, and giving advice about cars which his children always appreciated. He loved spending time on Ponhook lake marking rocks with buoys and staunchly refusing to get his boat licence. Jim enjoyed hauling and chopping wood, waterskiing, and boating into his seventies. He always maintained a sense of humour and positive attitude even throughout his illness.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen, daughter Eleanor (Reid) Campbell, son Jamie (Ann Michele) MacDonald (Nashville, TN), grandsons David (Rebecca) and Daniel (Samantha) Campbell, William and Alexander MacDonald, great grandchildren Juliana, Winston and Elizabeth, brother Gary (Mary Lin) MacDonald, sisters-in-law Dorothy Moser and Ann Ferris MacDonald and several nieces and nephews. Jim was pre-deceased by his parents, his brothers David and John, his brother-in-law John Moser and his sister-in-law Margo MacDonald.
Cremation has taken place. In accordance with Jim’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. A private family burial will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank NS Health’s Continuing Care and Palliative Care teams, the VON, caregivers Wumi and Lucinda and Hospice Halifax. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
