Born August 4th, 1953 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Jerry was the son of the late Bernard and Christina (McInnis) O’Brien. He is survived by his beloved bride Diane (Martell), his sons Sean Patrick (Leah Mae), Liam Gregory (Kaitlin), brothers Bernard Wayne and David (Karen), as well as his cousins and several nieces. Jerry was predeceased by his step-mother Clara (Graves), his brother John, and his brother Gregory (in infancy).
Jerry was a proud East Coaster with strong Irish roots and a family man. He was a graduate of Saint Mary’s University and held a degree in Commerce. Jerry worked for many years in the automotive industry and developed relationships and friendships with people all across Canada during his career. He spent time on the road frequently for work, and always spoke so fondly of his colleagues and clients. Jerry acted as a mentor in life and in business, and believed that a true measure of success was the ability to share guidance and support with others. Jerry loved to travel, and was never happier than when planning his next adventure with his wife, friends, and children. Italy and Ireland held a special place in his heart. His time in Italy inspired him to learn everything he could about wine, and he kept a wine collection that could make a sommelier blush. Summer days would find him out on his boat with friends and family, exploring the Halifax Harbour and having picnics on McNabs Island. Jerry loved to host, and you would always be greeted with a glass of red wine, a plate of Irish cheese, and a big smile when you walked in the door of his home. Jerry could often be found in his famous Beatles’ themed home bar strumming away on his guitar, and he instilled that love of music in his sons. His outgoing personality and his ability to see the best in people made him well loved. His close friends became extensions of his family, and Jerry’s true passion was his family. He was a dedicated and loving husband to Diane, and will be remembered as her soulmate. Jerry was so proud of his sons and was a constant source of support and encouragement for them. He lives on through them every day. Jerry lived a wonderful life and everyone around him could feel that.
Jerry and his family would like to thank the staff in Ward 8.2 at the Halifax Infirmary who took such compassionate care of him during his time there. The family would also like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support, whether it be in the form of drives, hugs, or soup. It was incredibly appreciated.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday, February 21st, and a gathering to celebrate Jerry’s life is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 22nd. Both events take place at JA Snow Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Drive Halifax, NS.
