Born in Sydney Cape Breton on September 1, 1939 he was the son of the late Malcom and Mae (Morley) Cameron. John’s early years were spent in Sydney and after living a few years in Toronto and California he put down roots in Halifax.
Johns artistic side manifested itself early in life in his love of cooking, gardening, music, decorating, artwork and in his long career as a hair stylist . John was not known for his carpentry or electrical skills. If a three pronged plug didn’t fit into a 2 pronged outlet, you simply cut off the third prong. And one doesn’t need a screwdriver as long as you have a butter knife. Many friends and family were the recipients of Johns culinary skills. And the delicious and beautifully presented meals he prepared more than made up for the lengthy post meal clean-up. When John moved to Halifax he met and married his one true love, Fran and they spent 48 years together. They had two children Alison and Matthew. John was a caring, patient and considerate husband, father, brother and uncle.
John taught himself to appreciate classical music and enjoyed the time he spent singing in various choirs in Halifax. His love of Christmas was evident early in the season and those driving up the Bay Road were fortunate enough to see Johns beautifully decorated tree in the window starting in November. And Christmas dinner at the Camerons was always a highlight of the year. Those that knew John best knew that under that wicked sense of humour and brutal honesty was a deeply caring, kind and compassionate man and he will be remembered with a smile and great love.
John is survived by his wife Frances Jean (Ross), son Matthew and nieces and nephew in both California and Halifax. John was predeceased by his daughter Alison, his Aunt Isabelle (MacVicar) and his sister Katherine (Kay) Phillips.
A celebration of life will be held in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax 2-4 pm on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.
