Dorothy, Heather,Greg, Kirk and families.  
The reality that John is no longer with us has not yet hit home.  
Our Christmas get-togethers have gone on almost without interuption since 1968, with us often playing games that made us think and laugh and groan at our silly answers.  We will miss John's jokes and his laughter, and I especially will miss his hugs.  
John and I often clashed over our political preferences.  When he admired an afgan I made, I offered to make him one, too, and he teasingly accepted - as long as it was "Tory blue"!  Well the afgan is made, John and  I only wish you were here to snuggle into it.

I just found out about John's passing. I am in Missoouri at present.  I talked with John about 4 weeks ago as he was riding his bike back from the causeway. 
John was my friend. We have shared our thoughts with each other for many years.
It sure will seem different not to see him around the area.  I will miss John very much.
If there is anything I can do for any of you regarding his home there on the Point do not hesitate to ask.  I will be back in South West within the next 2 weeks. 
I will always cherish the friendship we had.

In memory of a special friend

Dear Dorothy and family,
 
Both Diana and I were shocked and saddened to learn of John's passing last week. We just returned from a week in New Hampshire when we received your message. He seemed so well and in such great spirits last July at our lobster do. I gather that it must have been a rather sudden event, which would have been nice for John but not nice at all for the family. Both my mother and father died suddenly so I am able to appreciate the impact of losing loved ones in this manner. In my Dad's case, he was planning to spend Thanksgiving with us and would leave Digby immediately after a wedding he planned to attend. He seemed in excellent spirits and was looking forward to joining us for Thanksgiving. So you can well imagine our reaction at learning of his death. Things like this are pretty devastating but death is just a part of life and we can derive comfort .from the fact those who die suddenly are spared considerable pain and suffering. 

John was a kind and gentle soul who got on well with just about everyone. As I recall during our days at Mount A John could always be relied upon to lend a helping hand whenever one was needed. I know that his loss will be a wound that only time will heal but it will heal and the sun will again rise on happier times. Dorothy, know that with the help and support of your family that you will get through these dark days and life will go on much as it always has. And knowing John, this is exactly what he would have wanted.
 
Both Diana and I will be thinking of you during these troubling days and want you to know that we are all looking forward to your joining us at next year's lobster event and hope to see you then. Good times and good friends are cherished things that enhance our lives and should be frequently embraced.

Our hearts have gone out to you this past week. We are so very sad to lose our cousin John, too - seeing him in Port Mouton was always a pleasure - good conversation and the big smile from him as he passed on his bicycle on beautiful summer days. There was also the wonderful feeling that there was extended family in Port Mouton and he and I both found such mutual satisfaction in returning to our roots. 
To all of you, please remember that your extended family is still in Port Mouton at least part-time and would love to see you, too.

We were devastated by John's death.  We send our deepest sympathy and love to Dorothy, Heather, Greg, Kirk and to all his family for their very sad loss.
I will always remember John's irrepressible humour, his great hospitality, impressive knowledge and his gentle dignity.
 I hope that the days that we spent with him in Port Mouton so very recently will provide lovely happy memories for Dorothy as it does for us.

I'm so upset that John passed away. He was so vital and energetic when we were together two weeks ago. I am having a hard time understanding that he has gone. My deepest sympathies to all of you.
What a life John had! Full of adventures.I was lucky to hear so many of his stories. He was always so humorous. I have rarely laughed so much as I have with him. He'll be forever an inspiration to us all. His code was so strong. I won't easily forget the time he threatened to jump up and down on the hood of my red Lada! Quite the Tory!
 So recently at Port Mouton he was such a good host--as usual. The hours he spent preparing the chowder and later the jambalaya with such good results. What a treat!
On the golf course at White Point, he had a great game and we took it easy, playing and looking at the beautiful scenery. At a couple of places we sat on benches by the tee and watched the incredible surf. The sound of the breaking waves accompanied us all the way round. I've never seen him play such great shots-particularly his drives. He was in his element, on his course. Everybody recognized him and so obviously respected him.
What a swim we had at Sommerville beach. Amazing day.
The next day John said that there was a new sign on Sommerville Beach--'No Swimming in Undies'
That was John-a desire to make the most out of any situation and to always have a laugh.
I'll miss him an awful lot. He was the greatest friend.

A real shock to hear of John's passing.  We so much enjoyed meeting you and seeing John for the first time in many years at the Purdy's Mt. A - geology reunion this past summer.  Although we had not been in touch over the years we shared many a great time at Mt. A  and we had made plans to get together at a Mt A football game this fall - I will miss him - but not forget him - a great guy to have known and I will cherish that Mt. A hat John gave me! 

I do not have the pleasure of knowing Heather, Greg or Kirk but do know how proud John was of his family.

When we first discovered our little spot on Bell’s Point Road we knew we had a treasure, turns out we had two.  Our friend and neighbour, John, was a gift.  Each encounter and interaction was a treat.  We enjoyed his stories and updates on PM happenings, his opinions on world events, and the baseball and football highlights of the week.  His quick wit and sharp mind were delightful.  We looked forward to our morning chats.  Jake always on the lookout for the “cyclist” would alert us to an opportunity to enjoy John’s company.
He was an excellent neighbour.  We knew he was always keeping an eye on things.  We had put on a fire one morning and then ran into town.  When we arrived back John and Hal were nearly ready to break a window as they’d seen smoke and didn’t realize we were at the cottage.  We all had quite a laugh when we told him the door was unlocked.
We are thankful for the time that we were able to spend with John and his family.  We have so many good memories and I know that we’ll make lots more. It’s just not going to be the same without him though.

I was so sorry to hear about John's passing away so suddenly. Having been through the same experience nine weeks ago I can say with certainty that prayers help and I am praying for all of you for God's peace and healing.

John spent many years working in the Bathurst Mining Camp and I have many fond memories of his time spent at the Mines Bfranch. He became a great friend and I always looked forward to hearing from him. He was one of the finest gentleman I have ever known. My sympathies to you all but know you have many fond memories of John.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. We are thinking of you all and know time is the one thing you can count on to lessen your grief.

We were very saddened to hear of John's passing. It was my pleasure to not only have John as a geology classmate but to have roomed with him for 2 years on the 3rd floor of Truman House,at Mount Allison Univ., where we were known as the "East Boys" or the "Chin's Boys".

John was witness to my many trips across the marsh to Amherst to court my wife of 52 years. There were times when he shook his head in dismay as I hitch hiled my way to and from Amherst in the dead of winter.

Being in the same courses and room could have its problems as there were constant questions back and forth. These were especially heavy at exam time when it would lead to a frantic lights on and a search for the correct answer to an out of the dark question.

In those days of the 50's, the Geology Department occupied a large room on the ground floor of the Science Building. Our main area of study was across from the Men's washroom. John and I actually shaped 1/2 a brick which served as a back stop to the washroom door into a sedimentary looking piece of rock. Somehow it found its way into the Geology Department's rock collection. We were delighted when it appeared on the final rock examine and we were asked for its origins etc etc... chuckle.. chuckle..

After graduation we went our separate ways. I chose to go to the far northwest and John worked in Ontario and Quebac and eventually consulted from his beloved home province. John and friend Everett Small came to see us during our short stay at Elliott Lake, Ontario and for the birth of our second child. John became very excited when I took my sweetie on a very rough ride, which he claimed had its affects the next day with the birth. Occasionally we saw one another at the Prospector's and Developers Convention at Toronto.

The big event the past few years was our short get together's, hosted by Colin and Diane Purdy at Windsor, Nova Scotia. Many a chuckle over past and present happenings were relived and shared by the Leslie's, Ripleys, Purdy's and Van Tassell's.

We will miss you John, but fear not, your memory will live on, and to Dorothy and family, stay in touch.

We are very sorry to hear of John's passing. We enjoyed his visits and found his presence next door to our cottage very warming. As a distant cousin, he told me many stories of old relatives from Port Mouton.

So sorry to hear of John's passing. We went to school together in Port Mouton and Liverpool and those were great times.

John was well respected in the mineral industry.  He gave me one of my first jobs in the industry in 1973.  I enjoyed many technical conversations with John and had much respect for his opinions as did many others.
Many times I remember being at 54 Edward Laurie Drive when the kids were very young.  John was always the very proud Father.
