

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Hal Underwood, 89 years old, September 29, 2017 at home. He was born May 6, 1928 in Halifax. He was the son of the late Charles Michael Underwood and Maude Lydia (Deal) Underwood.
He is survived by his daughter Katherine (at home), sister Gertrude (Larson) of Todd’s Island, daughter-in-law Karen Underwood, grandchildren, Jamie, Kathy and Nicole; great grandchildren Bryson, Dominic and Mila and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Hal was predeceased by his wife Bernice “B” and his son James “Jim”. He was also predeceased by his sister Mary, brothers Frank, Leo, Charles and Joseph.
In his youth, Hal played on many organized sports teams and he was a member of many provincial championship teams. Regarding his career, Hal was a Sales Broker for many different companies covering the Atlantic Provinces for approximately 60 years. He and his son Jim were well known in the retail trade industry. In addition to his sales brokerage business, Hal had several neighborhood convenience stores in Halifax and Halifax County, managed by his brother Frank. Hal was also owner of the Three Dolphins Beer, Wine and Water store in Upper Tantallon from 1997 to 2005.
Hal also did a lot of volunteer work. He formed and ran the Cartoon Characters Bowling League for several years. Hal served on St. Agnes Parish Council in the West end of Halifax in various capacities. Hal worked with Boy Scouts and Venturer Troops in St. Agnes Parish. He also ran a large youth club in the parish from 1972 to 1973. Hal also dabbled in politics serving as the President of the Halifax Chebucto PC Association for a couple of years.
End of life care has been entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home. Hal will be cremated. At his request there will be no flowers, visitation or service. Donation may be made to the SPCA or Bonnie Lea Farm. His remains will be buried at a later date at a family only gathering.
