Gledhill, (Joe) Joseph, C.D., Halifax, NS, died April 19, 2021. Born in 1936, in Glace Bay, NS, Joe was the son of Joseph and Gladys (Grant) Gledhill. After schooling, he underwent the Officer Candidate Program with the Canadian Army, where he was commissioned and served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Artillery for about 12 years.
Upon leaving the Canadian Forces, he worked as a consultant with the Technical Service Council in Toronto, eventually becoming Director of the Executive Division. In the 1970’s, Joe returned to Atlantic Canada to join H.B. Nickerson & Sons Limited as Manager, Personnel & Labour Relations. In the early 1980’s, he was employed by IMP Group Limited, where he established the corporate Human Resources Department as Director, Human Resources, also enjoying labour relations as chief negotiator. Poor health forced him to take an early retirement.
An avid sportsman, Joe enjoyed football, hockey, swimming, camping, and later downhill skiing as well as amateur equestrian show jumping. He, and his wife Marilyn, enjoyed many trips to the Caribbean, taking pleasure in the wonderful waters and underwater life.
During mid-life, Joe served as a director of the Cape Breton Region VON, and later as a member of the Board of Stewards/Managers at several United Churches. Most recently, he served as a member of the Finance Committee at Edgewood-Oxford United Church.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Joyce Marilyn (Smith Besides his parents, Joe is predeceased by his only son, Joseph Leslie Gledhill, and by his sisters Gloria McLeod, Winnipeg; Dorothy MacKay, Kingston ON; Elsie McGean, Fredericton; Marjorie Mijer, Denver CO; Sylvia Warner, Saint John.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation and funeral service will be held at a later date.
