Joseph Francis Whalen died peacefully on March 25, 2025, in Bedford, Nova Scotia. Joe was born on April 4, 1930, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Daniel Francis Whalen and Martha Julia Whalen (nee Beddow). Shortly thereafter, his parents returned with him to Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, where he lived for most of his life.
Joe was the cherished husband of Genevieve Whalen (nee MacMaster) — the love of his life. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Joe served during the Korean War. He later dedicated his career to Eastern Telephone and Telegraph Co., and also had the distinction of being the original chair of New Deal Development and NEDAC. In his final days, Joe expressed a deep longing to return to Sydney Mines — to Brown Street — the home of his heart.
Joe is survived by his wife Genevieve, his children Jennifer (Bob), DF, and Julie (Brian); his grandchildren, Kate Quinn (Tyler), Grant Eisan (Victoria), and Kyle Eisan (Aly); and his great-grandchildren, Cian, John, Anna, JJ, Sadie and Rory. He also leaves behind many beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Kevin (Madonna), and his sons, Joseph and John. A burial will take place at a later date, in Sydney Mines, where he will join Joseph and John.
We love you, Joe, and miss you.
