The family of Ken Spears are sad to announce his death on April 22, 2026 at the age of 96. He passed following a remarkably long, healthy life and very brief illness. Ken was born in Ketch Harbour, NS to John and Agnes Spears, the youngest of six children (Gerald, Bill, Basil, Joan and Mary). Following the death of his father, he joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 15 and traveled a large part of the world by sea. Eventually love called him home when he met and married Joan Neatt, the true love of his life. Once back on land, he joined the Halifax Fire Department as a professional Firefighter, a career in which he was proud to serve for 35 years. Together they raised six boys in Fairview: Joseph, Mike (Tanya), Brian (Carolyn), John (Michele), Bruce (Wendy) and Andrew (Jennifer). Eleven beloved grandchildren and eight adored great grandchildren followed. Ken and Joan were married for over fifty years until her passing in 2012, but his love for her endured his entire life. Ken was devoted to his family, involved in our lives as a living example of a true gentleman. He taught us resilience and self sufficiency through time spent boating, fishing, hunting and hard work. Ken was a devoted friend to many. He genuinely cared, had a quick wit and loved a good story. His life was lived with roaring bravery, quiet dignity and an abundance of charm. He will be deeply missed and forever loved by many. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings, Joan and his granddaughter Andrea. The family will receive visitors 4-8pm Wednesday, April 29th in the J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Funeral service will be held 10 am Thursday, April 30 in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 6903 Mumford Rd, Halifax.
