It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Lillian Hines, on Thursday September 9th, 2021 at Northwood Ivany Place Nursing Home, Bedford. Born on June 29th, 1940 in North Sydney, Lillian was the second daughter of the late Donald Stewart and Frances (Dolomont).
From a young age, Lillian, her mother, and siblings worked tirelessly to ensure the family stayed together following the untimely death of their father. Lillian was afforded an opportunity to study laboratory technology in Halifax, and returned to work in Cape Breton primarily based at St. Rita’s Hospital. Lillian loved her work in laboratory technology and was well-respected by her colleagues (“super-tech”) some of whom became her close friends. It was upon her return to Cape Breton that she met her darling Richie, raising their family among beloved friends and neighbours on Patnic (“Panic”) Avenue. Richie and Lillian were very active members of Immaculate Heart Parish like many others in the area.
Throughout her life, Lillian had a sixth-sense for recognizing when someone was in need and would lean in with boundless compassion and kindness. Described as “Mother-to-All” by her sisters, nephews, nieces, and neighbors, Lillian made an impact on each life she touched. Although Lillian experienced a long illness with Alzheimers, her family and friends still remember (and can be heard using) “Lill-isms”. Funny, smart, kind, and no-nonsense, we were honoured to have her in our lives.
Lillian is predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Richard (Rick) Hines and is survived by children, Colleen (Darren) Currie of Cole Harbour; Catherine O’Leary (Yvon Kadri) of Bedford; Richard (Kate Pittman) of Calgary; David (Kat Lundrigan) of Calgary. A loving grandmother, she will be missed by grandchildren Drew and Christopher O’Leary of Lantz; Mitchell, Liam, Ryan and Matthew Currie of Cole Harbour; Lauren, Cole and Ben Hines of Calgary; Myles and Roam Hines, and Colton Lundrigan of Calgary. She is also survived by her sisters, Anne Lang-Harris; Donna Kenney; Pauline Sheppard; Lydia Vingoe; and brother Jack Stewart, and is predeceased by sisters Maureen Stewart and Shirley Pinkham.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 15th, at 10am, at St. Ignatius Parish in Bedford. Respecting Lillian’s career in health care, the family requests masks be worn inside the church during the service. Post funeral, a reception for family and friends will be held: the location will be announced at the mass.
The burial will take place in Sydney Forks, Cape Breton at Resurrection Cemetery, on Friday, September 17th at 3pm. with a reception to follow at St. Theresa's Parish hall in Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lillian may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia. The family would like to thank the staff of Northwood Ivany Place, Bluenose Cove for the kindness and compassion she received while in their care.
