

Lois Marion Gilson passed away at her home, the Carlyle, on Tuesday September 28, 2016 after celebrating her 102nd birthday on August 27th. She was born in Parrsboro in 1914 to Grace (Parker) and Captain Edward F. Barkhouse, Her mother passed in 1918 when Lois was 4 and her sister Winnifred was 8, and they were cared for by Margaret Ann Card. Captain Barkhouse passed away in 1954.
Lois attended school in Parrsboro and after attending Normal College, she taught school in Petite Riviere for two years. She graduated from Acadia University in 1939 with a degree in Household Economics and interned at Montefiore Hospital in New York City. She obtained her Master of Arts in Institutional Management from Columbia University.
Lois worked at Montefiore Hospital for 6 years and at Worcester City Hospital as Head Dietitian for 38 years. Winnifred and Lois travelled extensively in their early years on their father’s sailing ship during summer vacations. They also enjoyed travels together after Lois’ husband Francis passed away. They were on as many as 27 cruises. Many of those were with her cousin Elizabeth Miller. One trip which they particularly enjoyed was a flight on the Concord from London to New York City in 1980. For 30 years they enjoyed spending the winter months in their condominium in Orlando, Florida.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Francis Gilson; sister Winnifred Rowse. She is survived by cousins Elizabeth Miller, Dianne Hines and Sue Daniels of New Minas, Gail Ojala of Shelburne Massachusetts and Sharon Miller of Gainesville Virginia.
