Margaret Jean Thompson, age 89, passed away January 19, 2014, in Halifax, Nova Scotia surrounded by family who loved her dearly. She was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the only daughter of D. Herbert Mackenzie and Annie J. MacDonald, attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. She was employed with the Department of National Revenue, Taxation Division; and later, the Department of Agriculture, Entomology Division. As a long-standing member of Bethany United Church, she was active in many facets; Sunday school teacher; the much-beloved Rackham Unit of the U.C.W.; and a long-standing member of the Flower Committee. An indefatigable volunteer, she gave of herself and of her time ceaselessly to others through knitting, cooking, donating, encouraging as well as knocking on many neighbourhood doors for the Canadian Cancer Society; The Canadian Diabetes Association; and The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, but one of her greatest joys was painting with the “girls” at the I.W.K. Auxiliary which raised thousands of dollars with their highly-coveted painted items. The passions of Margaret’s life were her family, painting, reading, baking, music (particularly, jazz), travel and loving others. As a founding member of the Art Bethany Painting Group, her weekly association with her “kindred spirits” brought much delight and enjoyment, and she was most thankful for their constant love and encouragement. Margaret and her family savoured many trips and she particularly relished the time spent in Maui and summers on Prince Edward Island at Shaw’s Hotel.
She is survived by her loving husband, Grant; daughters, Heather Marriott (Clyde Beer), Anne Thompson and Carole Thompson (Stephen Morley) and son, Andrew Thompson; brother, Kenneth Mackenzie (Elaine); sister-in-law, Margaret Ferguson, niece, Jane (John) Hamer; nephews, Rod Thomson, Allan, Scott (Marie), Don MacKenzie (Erin); cousins Marjorie Read, Doris Jenkins, Jack (Evelyn) Picketts, Elaine (Paul) Robinson, Anne (Carl) Purcell, Darrell (Evelyn) Picketts and other family.
