Christie, Georgina (Joseph Camille), SC, died peacefully at Caritas Residence in Halifax, NS, on Sunday, January 4, 2026 at the age of 104. Sister Georgina was born in West Bathurst (Youghall), New Brunswick, on June 1, 1921, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Rose de Lima (Godin) Christie.
Sister Georgina entered the Sisters of Charity-Halifax in 1938 and made her first profession in 1941. She was first missioned as a teacher at St. Agnes Academy in Bermuda, where she ministered with love for 12 years. In the years that followed, Sister Georgina taught Grade 8 in schools in Bathurst, NB, and Meteghan and Church Point, NS. In 1959, she earned her B.A. from Mount Saint Vincent College and later completed a Master’s degree in Education at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont in 1968. In addition to her teaching credentials, she obtained certification as a Guidance Counselor and went on to serve in school administration.
In 1975, Sister Georgina flourished in a new ministry giving her heart to the young women at the Home of the Guardian Angel in Halifax, NS for eleven years. She spent countless hours listening to their stories while teaching the women how to cook. It was these young women that grew very fond of Georgina and renamed her “Georgie,” a nickname that has remained with her to this day.
As well, Sister Georgie ministered at Pius X Parish (Fairview, NS), bringing the Eucharist to and serving to the most vulnerable homebound parishioners, and as always she served with great warmth and love. Later, as a member of the House of Prayer in Quebec City from 1991 to 2002, she walked with those seeking a deepening of their spirituality. Georgina’s ministries eventually brought her “home” to the Motherhouse, and as the Coordinator in the Halifax Vice Province giving spiritual direction in prayer and reflection.
In 2008, Sister Georgina returned to Halifax, NS, where she spent her final years at Caritas Residence. There she sat and gave presence to many of the elder Sisters in their final days, caring for and praying with the sick and dying. She lovingly walked many of her elder Sisters home.
Throughout her life, Sister Georgina Christie was a quiet but extraordinary source of love and comfort to those around her, right up to her last day. Among her fellow Sisters, the staff who cared for her were deeply affected by her loving presence. She made an invaluable contribution to the lives of the other Sisters and residents. Even following a stroke in her 90’s and she lost the ability to speak, God’s love shone through her eyes and spoke volumes without words. Without effort and without judgement, Sister Georgina made people feel heard and understood, as though their stories mattered simply because they were theirs. Her love was often felt in the simplest ways: a hand held in hers, a gentle kiss that made you feel truly seen and deeply cherished. Georgina’s legacy will live on in all who knew and loved her as one who truly reflected “God is Love.”
In addition to her parents, Sister Georgina is predeceased by her brother Richard, and her sisters Rose Marie (Doucet), Frances (Brewster), Josephine (Crowley), Kathleen (Dube), Delia (DeVarenne), and Margaret (Moreau). She is survived by a nephew Marc Doucet and niece Gerardine Doucet.
