Obituary of Marie June Smyth

IN THE CARE OF

JA Snow Funeral Home

Marie June Smyth (Himmelman) BA, BMus BED formerly of Foxglove Lane Halifax passed away peacefully at Northwood Centre Halifax on August 3 at the age of 93. Marie was born in Rose Bay, Lunenburg, daughter of Harris And Winnie (Cook) Himmelman. Marie was an accomplished pianist and taught music throughout the Halifax school system playing an instrumental role in many Music Festivals and choirs. After retirement Marie taught piano lessons from her home. Marie was a loyal member of the Retired Music Teachers Association, Alumni of St. Mary’s University, Dalhousie University and Maritime Conservatory of Music. Marie was an avid subscriber at Symphony Nova Scotia and Neptune Theatre and was committed to supporting her many charities. During their earlier years of marriage Marie and her husband Angus travelled extensively throughout Nova Scotia and Canada attending local theatre and music festivals. Marie was a long standing member of the Roman Catholic Church attending Saint Catherine of Sienna, Saint Lawrence, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Saint Benedict. Family, neighbours and friends will remember Marie’s unique and sometimes challenging personality but will remember with a smile her Christmas card that included her annual update on their life, listing weather storms by date, the number of bags of leaves they raked, the festivals and events they attended. She typed this with two fingers on her antique typewriter that had letters that skipped and inconsistent ink. Marie was predeceased by her parents and husband of many years, Angus James Smyth and niece, Barbara Pitts. Marie is survived by her brother Ray Himmelman (Janine) Mahone Bay, nephew Donald Himmelman (Grace) Mahone Bay, as well as Angus’s nieces and nephews Maureen Rogers (Bruce) Connie Slaunwhite (Mike) Louise Smith (Richard) Gwen Smyth, Peter Smyth (Wanda) Stephen Smyth (Lois). A special thank you to the many caregivers in both Parkland Aberdeen and Northwood Centre 6-C floor for their kind patience and care over the last years. Everyday you make a difference in someone’s life. Visitation at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Monday, August 9th from 2 pm to 5 pm.
