It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marjorie Elizabeth “Lib” Cleveland in the early hours of August 8th, 2021. She was surrounded by family in her final hours at Parkland by the Gardens where she resided for the past six years.
Lib was born in Halifax on April 29th, 1929. She was the only child of the late Geoffrey & Edna Doull. Lib graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School and continued her education at Dalhousie University. Following her graduation she started down her long path of community service first as a social worker followed by many years of volunteering.
She spent more than 20 years with the Junior League of Halifax where she was very involved in a number of fund raising endeavours, most notably many years of the “Follies” and the Bargain Box.
Lib was also a driving force in the early years for the IWK Women’s Auxiliary and worked diligently for over 50 years. She was heavily involved in Kermesse, whether it be working on the gate in the pouring rain in her younger years or in the Art Gallery many years later. She was also actively involved with the Gift Horse as a buyer and spent many hours working in the shop. Never to take no for an answer, Lib canvassed local businesses for the funding of the IWK Adventure Playground after federal funding fell through. A ceremony was held to rename the playground The Elizabeth Cleveland PlayGarden.
Lib believed in keeping busy. As if volunteering wasn’t enough she chose to put her interest in education to work for a period of time at the Atlantic Institute of Education. When she wasn’t taking care of her family, working, volunteering her time or playing bridge she could probably be found shopping, she loved a good deal. October 8, 2006 was a very special day for mom when the NS government allowed stores to be open on Sundays. If the Fitbit was around in her prime, we’re sure world records would have been shattered on her quest for a bargain.
Lib was predeceased by her parents, Geoffrey and Edna and Grover Cleveland, her loving husband of more than 50 years. She is survived by her son David (Esther Cooke), Digby, son Mark (Dianne), Grimsby, Ontario and daughter Lisa (Michael) Hernon, Halifax. She is also survived by her grandchildren Amanda (Jamie) Hebb, Grimsby, Ontario, Christian Hernon, Halifax, Sarah Hernon, Halifax and great grandchildren, Kylie and Ashley Hebb, Grimsby, Ontario.
A special thank you to the many caregivers of Parkland at the Gardens for their care these past few years, especially those on the 2nd floor. Thank you for making a difference in Lib’s life.
Arrangements have been entrusted to JA Snow Funeral Home in Halifax. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place at a later date. Condolences to the family may be made online at www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
Donations in Lib's memory may be made to the Auxiliary of the IWK Health Centre, 5850/5980 University Ave., PO Box 9700, Halifax, NS. B3K 6R8, or to a charity of your choice.
