It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved mother Mary Caroline “Joan” O’Malley, on Thursday, October 28th, 2021, at the Halifax Infirmary. Joan was born in Grand River, PEI on June 27th,1932, and passed away peacefully in Halifax at the age of 89.
Joan is survived by her loving family. Her children, Sharon (David) Nicholl, Tom (Rhoda), Terry (Steve) Moore, Ann (Jim) Cecco; her seven grandchildren, Greg (Chantelle), Josh (Shelby), Vanessa (Miguel), Liam (Jillian), Brianne (Jarett), Jordan, Julianna (Matt); and seven great-grandchildren, Josh (Morgan), Claire, Cece, Noah, Oliver, Emily, Nereya, and Arlo; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly.
Joan is predeceased by her parents, John & Margaret Arsenault, and siblings Willie, John L, Maisy, and Doris.
As the matriarch of the family, mom took on many roles and was always ready to share a laugh, tell a story, give a hug, or timely advice whenever she was called upon. Mom also loved to entertain; she was a wonderful cook and filled many requests for special dishes - especially her tea biscuits, pound cake, and fudge which was enjoyed by so many. Mom we will forever love you, and miss your smile, laughter, and guidance.
A part from being a mother, Joan was also an inspiring businesswoman. She helped pave the way for women in Nova Scotia by working in unconventional roles including a successful career as the first female car salesperson in Nova Scotia, and finally as the owner and operator of the Halifax Surf Club; an iconic private nightclub.
