Michael Bernard Backman

Michael was the only child of the late Basil and Edythe Backman. He was a loving husband to Wendy Carol (Matheson) for fifty-four years, proud father of Jill Elizabeth Backman (Mark Murphy) and Ryan Ashley Backman (Meredith MacGray) and “Dukie” (as he was affectionately known) to his beautiful granddaughters Kate, Olivia and Emma.

Michael achieved a successful career in sales with Victor Comptometer and Xerox Canada. Always possessing an entrepreneurial spirit, Michael owned and operated five various businesses during his lifetime.

He was an avid Rotarian belonging to the Dartmouth Club and later the Halifax Harbourside Club. He cherished the friends he made there and especially important to him was giving back to the community.

Michael served two years as Chair of the Board for the Nova Scotia Centre for the Environmentally Sustainable Economic Development.

Recreation and relaxation came with sailing Wine Drops, a Douglas 32, along the beautiful South Shore and St. Margaret’s Bay. After retirement, he and Wendy “hit the road” full time in their motor coach, Minnie, and travelled extensively for four years. Together they experienced many new adventures, made many new friends along the way. They explored, they learned, they enjoyed.

Being drawn by history, charm and the beauty of Lunenburg, Michael and Wendy made it their full time home almost eight years ago where Michael found tranquility and comfort.

Funeral services will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, N.S. at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, February 4, 2025. Family burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Halifax, N.S.
