Michael was born in Halifax. He is survived by his parents, Dr. Andrew B. Stewart and
Christine K. Stewart, his children Rowan, Jonathan, and Jocelyne Stewart of Bedford,
and his sister Wendy Stewart of Halifax.
Michael attended Charles P. Allen High School and Dalhousie University. In high school
he participated in the music program, with a particular interest in trumpet and guitar. He
was active in Scouting; in fact his first job was lifeguarding at the old Camp Lone Cloud
at Miller's Lake. He enjoyed his time on the Bedford Beavers Swim Team, winning
many medals and breaking Provincial records. He later enjoyed many summers working
as a lifeguard for Bedford Parks and Recreation, and winters at Dartmouth Sportsplex,
and Sackville Sport Stadium. Michael loved to play hockey and was a proud member of
the Bedford Blues for most of his youth and teen years – a love that he has passed onto
his children.
Michael enjoyed working with people. He excelled at customer service, winning
numerous awards throughout his career. He spent many years working at the Sony Store
in Dartmouth, and then managing the Sony Store in Bedford. Even when his shift had
ended, you could find him installing electronics at his customers' homes. Through his
work at Sony, he was awarded the National Customer Experience Champion Award.
Most recently he worked as a “Genius”at the Apple Store at the Halifax Shopping Centre
where he enjoyed his work immensely, and his fellow workers respected his mentorship
and enthusiasm to help other employees as well as customers. Michael knew people
everywhere, and always remembered conversations from the past. He loved to help
people. He was outgoing with an infectious personality.
Michael’s children were his greatest pride. Any spare time would find him planning a
new adventure with them. They enjoyed his hikes, time at the lake swimming, fishing,
and kayaking, and his BBQing skills. Michael called them “his team”, and was proud of
their various qualities. He was a very loving father, and will be terribly missed by all his
family and friends.
Michael was a member of Bedford United Church and enjoyed tremendously the recent
on-line services. A Celebration of Life will take place at Bedford United Church in the
future, when we can once again gather.
Memorial donations to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or to Bedford
United Church in trust for the children.
