Norman David Raine, of Halifax NS, departed this life on January 1, 2026, at London Hall Care Home. His death resulted from complications arising from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He was 85 years old.
Norman was the oldest son of the late George and Edna (Fenton) Raine. Born April 28, 1940, in Halifax. He met the love of his life, Sarah-Jane, and they married on February 8, 1964.
In Norman’s working career he started as a diesel mechanic in 1959 with Cummins Diesel and was transferred to Fredericton in 1966. After 27 years with that company, he then changed careers and went with the NB government as a mechanic. He then moved on to being the shop's superintendent before retiring in 1999. It was at that time that he and Sarah-Jane decided to move back to his childhood home on the Northwest Arm with their sailboat moored in front of the house.
Norman loved his family and was always there with a helping hand for friends. In Norman’s early life, he learned to sail and figure skate. When his girls were old enough and started to skate, Norman got his skates back out and spent time on and off the ice with figure skating. He was the team leader for the 1986 Canada Winter Games and several National Competitions for NB.
Norman’s love for sailing and being on the water continued through his life. It was one of his greatest passions. He was a Life Member of the Fredericton Yacht Club and a longtime member of the Armdale Yacht Club where he served in various positions with the Committee of Management. Also, a Life Member and Instructor with the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron.
He also enjoyed building models. It started with truck kits that lined the wall of the family room in Fredericton, then when back in Halifax Norman turned his attention to building model boats from scratch and joined the Maritime Ship Modelers Guild.
Following in his grandfather and father’s footsteps Norman was a 50-year member of the Masonic order. He was a Past Master of Hiram Lodge No 6 in NB and was affiliated with St. Andrew's Lodge No. 1 in Halifax. He was also a 33-degree member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite both in NB and NS and served as Past Thrice Puissant Grand Master of the NB Lodge of Perfection and Most Wise Sovereign of the NB Rose Croix Chapter. He was also a member of both the NB and NS, Royal Order of Scotland.
Norman was involved in his church both in Fredericton and Halifax. In Fredericton, he served in various positions on the Parish Council and was involved when the new church was built. In Halifax, he was a Church Warden and served for many years on the Property Committee.
Norman was predeceased by his father and mother; his brother Bernard and sister-in-law Gunta; father-in-law and his wife, George and Ruth Perry; brother-in-law Lawrence Perry and his wife Francios and sister-in–law Alice Cameron and her husband James.
