
Tingley (Read), Olive Katherine – 72 of Halifax, passed away peacefully Saturday October 15th on floor 5A of the VG Palliative Care Unit, closely cared for by her family and the supportive staff. Olive was born September 30th, 1939 in Sydney Cape Breton, the oldest child of Charlie and Kay Read. She was predeceased by her father and mother and is survived by; husband Michael, daughter Catherine (Halifax) with partner Josh, and sons Arthur (London), Paul (Halifax), Charles (Atlanta) with wife Kim, and granddaughters Regan and Reed, as well as, brothers David (Halifax) and John (Ottawa), and sister Sandra (Halifax). In 1960 Olive graduated from the Children’s Hospital and began her 50 year career as an RN, "retiring" in 2010. In addition to Nursing (and raising four children), Olive was actively involved in her United Church Women’s group, and many charitable causes including: the Brunswick Street Homeless Shelter, Vietnamese Resettlement project, the Cancer Society, the Halifax Helpline, and more. Olive was a loving mother whose life touched many people and she will be greatly missed. In her spare time, Olive enjoyed travelling to see her children as well as spending time at home in her garden. In recent years, she was an energetic researcher of her family's heritage, spending many hours tracking down ancestors from the Outer Hebrides to Cape Breton. Rockingham United Church will host a visitation on Friday October 21st from 7:00-9:00, and the funeral service on Saturday October 22 at 2:00.
