Jeanne has completed her friendly, loving, adventurous journey on Earth and travelled on to meet God. Born March 17, 1936 at Noel Road Hants County, she was the fifth of seven children born to Ogle and Mary (Ettinger) Awalt. She lived on Duffus Street in Halifax until the age of twelve and then moved to Timberlea. She attended Halifax County Vocational School where she completed a secretarial course and in 1953 she married Roger LeFrank and together they headed west.
They settled in Calgary, had two children and then Roger joined the RCAF. They were posted to various places in Canada, where they had three more children before moving to France, then Germany, with the final posting being at Cornwallis NS. They later moved to Yarmouth
and after retirement back to Timberlea.
As a child, Jeanne showed a strong interest in religion. Though not baptized or from a religious family, she attended St Georges Anglican Church on Fraser Rd. on her own. After her marriage she was baptized in the Catholic Church at Calgary and became a very active church member attending study groups, joining the Catholic Women’s League where she held various offices including Parish Chapter President. She worked on Marriage Preparation courses, Marriage Encounter, Alpha, Cursillo, was an active member of St Vincent de Paul Society and with her friend Barbara Blackburn headed a Sacred Heart parish project to assist Hope Cottage. Her life was marked with empathy, kindness and generosity.
A caring and fiercely protective mother, she took an active part in promoting her children’s participation in church, sports and character building activities such as Brownies and Guides. Once her children were all in school, she began her working life, first managing a photo shop at CFB Cornwallis and then training and working as a dental assistant in Digby. On moving to Yarmouth, she worked as a priest’s housekeeper and volunteered time at a children’s preschool. Finally, she spent several years as a seasonal Inspector for Canada Border Services. Jeanne happily visited many countries in Europe while stationed there and indulged in her love for travel freely in retirement, spending winters in Myrtle Beach South Carolina, Savannah Georgia, various places in Florida as well as Portugal, Spain, New Zealand and
Australia.
Along the way, she found time to help care for and nurture several grandchildren and delighted in their successes. She is survived by her husband, Roger, daughters Mary Anne (Ted Scovil), Susan (Jerry) DeLong, Bonnie (Mark Young), sons Christopher and Andrew (Joanne), brother Ronald (Joan) Awalt, sister Bonnie Falsetto, eight grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
As she aged, Jeanne developed Alzheimer’s Disease and moved with Roger to Shannex Parkland and four years later into full time care at Evan Hall, Parkstone, where she received excellent care and was content. On March 14th she suffered a stroke and with too many
health problems to permit any meaningful course of action, she slipped slowly and peacefully away under the watchful eyes of her loving and beloved family who provided her with as much comfort as possible.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 4th at 10:30 am at St. Benedict Parish, 45 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax. Following cremation, internment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Halifax.
By request, family flowers only. Donations in Jeanne’s memory may be made to Chalice Canada, Bedford NS, a charity that was very near and dear to Jeanne’s heart.
