It is with great sadness that the family of Paul Murphy announces that he passed away peacefully in his 86th year at the Victoria General Hospital on Dec 5th. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Percy Murphy and Helen (Newman) Murphy. In addition to his parents, Paul was predeceased by his wife Jeanne (Vaughan) in 2013.
A graduate of Saint Mary’s University and the Nova Scotia Technical College (now Dalhousie University) Paul earned his engineering degree in 1959. Following graduation, he joined MT&T (now Bell Aliant) where he devoted himself through his lengthy career. Paul retired as Vice President of Corporate Development in 1996.
Paul was commissioned as an Officer in the Canadian Army Reserve in 1956 where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, 723 Communications Squadron, and was made Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces Communications Reserve in 1984.
In retirement Paul loved to travel, spend time with his grandchildren and was a regular at Ashburn Golf and Country Club. He is survived by his sons Dave (Pam Holder), and Steve (Heather Long) and grandchildren, Katherine, Kieran, Joseph and Emily.
Paul will be deeply missed by Margaret Cullinan with whom he shared an enduring love in his later years.
The family would also like to thank The Berkeley Memory Care team for their support and kindness over the past year and staff of the Palliative Care unit of the Victoria General Hospital for their wonderful care during Paul’s last days.
Visitation will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home 339 Lacewood Dr. Halifax on Sunday December 10th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
Funeral Service will be at St Agnes Church on Monday December 11th at 10:00 am, Father Connolly presiding. Reception to follow. Burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery
