COOKE, Peter Gordon — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Peter Gordon Cooke, 64, of Halifax, on Friday, April 2, 2010, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Gordon and Margaret (MacKenzie) Cooke. Although Peter's interests, extracurricular activities and volunteer efforts were too extensive to list, his two biggest passions outside of his family were basketball and golf. He played basketball in masters and executive leagues, coached both children and adults from Westmount students to senior women. He held executive positions on prestigious associations, the most recent being president of the NSGA, chaired and organized numerous golf tournaments, and played any chance he could. Peter was also a successful entrepreneur who owned and operated the Starlight Barber Shop, which became a social meeting place for sport and current event conversations. As a result, over the past 40 years, many lifelong friendships were made. Peter lived every moment to the fullest and contributed to his community on so many levels. Even though he had many interests, his first priority was always his beloved family. Peter's gifts of compassion, humor, strength, sense of fairness, and work ethic will be carried on through his family and all the people whose lives he's touched for years to come. Peter is survived by his wife, Linda (Devine) Cooke; daughters, April Lipton and Tracy (Doug) Clarke; sons, Adam (Jan) Alguire-Cooke and Matthew Alguire-Cooke; sisters, Mary (Dave) Nicoll, Kathy (George) Taylor; brother, John Cooke; grandchildren, Justin, Hanna, Matthew, Sarah, Travis and Tyson. Peter was predeceased by son, Mark Cooke; and Basil "'Bub" Williams, who loved and raised Peter as his own son. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7, in J.A. Snow Chapel - 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, Rev. Carson Baxter officiating. Burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia .
