Born in Youghall (Bathurst), NB she was the second child of the late Harold and Marian (Ellis) Taylor. After graduating from high school, Phyllis attended Mount Allison University and achieved a home economics degree. Her first teaching position was in Springhill, NS where she met her future husband of 61 years, Lloyd. After a brief stay in Waltham, Mass where daughter Joan was born, Phyllis and Lloyd made their home in Halifax, where daughter Marian was born.
Mom taught sewing at St. Patrick’s Jr High and then Edgewood School retiring at age 50. Encouraged by sister Patsy, Mom took up golf and curling becoming quite proficient in both. As a member, and Past Day Ladies President, of the Mayflower Curling Club she travelled with her Masters team to BC to compete nationally representing Nova Scotia. She continued her love of sewing, knitting, and other craftwork, and enjoyed playing Bridge and Skat. She loved dancing and listening to music. A long-time member of United Memorial Church (now amalgamated with Hope United) Mom was a member of UCW, Couples Club, and convened many church suppers. She was very involved with her grandchildren and supported them in their activities.
Summers were spent in Youghall amongst family and friends. Phyllis is survived by many nieces and nephews who have fond memories of her open hospitality, warmth, sweetness, and smiles. She has been described as being gentle, kind, loving, welcoming, inspiring, with a joyful laugh. Mom was always a ‘snazzy’ dresser putting together great outfits that none of us would dare to try and pull off. And, a touch of lipstick when going out the door.
Phyllis will be deeply missed by daughters Joan MacInnis (Peter McAllister) and Marian (Rick) Kelly; grandchildren Regan MacInnis, Jennifer (Jonathan) Milne, Tom Kelly, and Jillian Kelly; and great granddaughter Hazel Milne. Phyllis was predeceased by husband Lloyd in 2014. Phyllis is also survived by sister Peggy; predeceased by sisters Elizabeth, Patsy, and brother John. In memory of Phyllis, an act of kindness to others would be most appreciated.
A visitation will take place on Monday, March 16 from 6 – 8 pm, and also a Celebration of Life Service on Tuesday, March 17 at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception, both events will take place in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax.
