It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father and grandfather on September 5, 2015. Rae is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Nancy (Partridge), his son Jeff (Donna) and his daughters Melissa (Brent) Doherty and Jenny (Todd) Carroll; brothers Ralph (Inga), Harvey (Debbie) and Steve as well as sisters Sandra (Peter) Drysdale and Jackie Ainslie as well as several nieces and nephews. Rae was predeceased by parents Doris and Elmo Ainslie. Rae delighted in his special times with his grandchildren, Holly & Ashley Ainslie, Rhys, Ronan & Katie Doherty, and Liam & Aaron Carroll, whether it was at the cottage, on family vacations or home at the lake.
Born in North Salem, Hants County, Rae grew up in Birch Cove and was involved in Cubs, Boy Scouts, various church groups, Sea Cadets and the Princess Louise Fusiliers Militia. Music was always of great interest to him and in his teen years he played with the locally known band, “The Axemen”. He also played with several other local bands in later years.
After building his own home in Lower Sackville, Rae lovingly devoted much of his spare time to his three children by coaching boys’ and girls’ baseball teams and hockey teams. His interest in the out of doors and the Boy Scout movement led him to being both a Cub and Scout leader, enjoying many a camping trip and canoe portage. Always known to be a good neighbor, he was eager to make time to help others. Being an avid and knowledgeable photographer, Rae worked for Atlantic Photo Supply Ltd. for twenty-seven years and Carsand Mosher Photographic for fifteen years until he retired due to ill health. He was a member of St. Margaret of Scotland church for many years and in the past served as a Warden, a member of the Parish Council, and served on several other committees. To spend time with his wife and family was his dearest pleasure. He also enjoyed singing (especially with his pals at the V.O.N. group), his motorcycle, music, dancing, photography and cottage campfires. Rae was a good, kind and gentle soul who taught by example and will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
The family would like to thank Dr. Morris Trager, Dr. Dan Carver, and Rae’s homecare team for their diligent care and kindness over the years.
Visitation will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Rae’s life will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 3761 Robie St. at 2:00 pm with Rev. Charles Bull and Rev. Randy Townsend officiating. There will be a reception following the service in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Rae’s memory. A private interment will be held at a later time.
“Angels of God from Heaven so bright
Watch over my children and guide them aright
Fold your wings ‘round them and guard from above
And sing to them softly of their father’s love.”
