He was the son of the late John “Jock” and Clarissa Jean Logan. He was born in New York City and spent his early years in Amherst, Nova Scotia. He attended Acadia University and in 1948 received a Bachelor of Science degree.
After Acadia, he moved to Montreal and joined E.R. Squibb and Sons, where he became Vice President Sales and Marketing. In 1966, he moved the family to Halifax, where he joined Andres Wines. He served on the board of directors of Andres Wines and was President of Andres Wines Atlantic. He was instrumental in the growth of the company into Canada’s largest winery.
Ralph was a member of a variety of Halifax clubs and organizations, including the Halifax Executive Association, the Saraguay Club, Armdale Yacht Club and Ashburn Golf Club.
After family, his greatest love was music. It filled up his house and his life. He was a connoisseur of jazz and classical, and whenever he had the chance, he would turn up the volume and smile. He also enjoyed golf, bridge, boating and spending time at the cottage on Rayworth Beach. He was widely known for his keen sense of humor and as a formidable player of (harmless) practical jokes, rarely acknowledging involvement.
Ralph was a wonderful husband, father and friend. He helped and mentored many people, touched many hearts, made many laugh, and left this world a better place. He would definitely prefer to be remembered with a smile over a tear.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 63 years Elizabeth Joyce (Grosscup), two sons John (Nora), Vancouver, and Jim (Nikki), Prince George, and four grandchildren Jack, Clare, Kate and James.
Cremation has taken place. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all Ralph’s caregivers and the VON. Visitation will be from 2-5 on Friday, April 10th at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Interment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
