Reta Agnes Boner (MacNeil), September 24, 1927 – May 15, 2020

We are saddened by the passing of our mother and grandmother Reta on May 15, 2020 at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home.

Reta was the daughter of the late Catherine (Gorman) and Daniel MacNeil.

She was a very devout Catholic and was a founding member of St. Pius X Parish (now Saint Benedict) and more recently St. Agnes Parish. She was a member of the CWL for over 50 years. She was a wonderful baker and seamstress and was very up to date on current affairs thanks to CBC radio. Those who knew her will attest to the fact that she was ready “to go” and was getting impatient having to wait for the final journey.

She is survived by her children Cathy Holliday (Dennis), Fred Bonner (Tracy) and Peter Bonner (Julie). She was blessed to have 4 grandchildren, Courtney (Andrew Hudson), Adam, Lucas and Gillian, 3 step-grandchildren Dennis Holliday (Laurel Leigh), Doug Holliday and Dave Holliday, 4 step great grandchildren Dani (Paul) Schole, David Holliday (Sandi), Darcy Holliday (Alex Green- Sale) and Alex Perreault (Jamie Trout). She had 2 great, great grandchildren Damon Holliday and Georgie Trout.

Reta is also survived by her sister-in-law Muriel MacNeil, 3 nieces and 3 nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Larry, her sister, Mary, and her brother Wallace. Due to Covid-19 a celebration of her life will take place at a later date.

A special thank you to St. Vincent’s Nursing Home and Parkland Clayton Park for the wonderful care they provided. Their staff was kind and caring and our mother loved residing at both places.

Dear Cathy, Fred and Peter,

Very sorry to read of your Mom’s passing. Our fathers knew and worked together closely for decades (ever since the late 50s & International Tuna Tournament days!). Because of that, especially when we “kids” were all younger, updates on family happenings were exchanged regularly. We didn’t see your Mom often, but she was always so friendly and kind whenever we were at your house.
No doubt she possessed that special degree of patience and understanding that came with the territory of being a photographer’s wife! Over the years there were many recipes that were passed along to my Mom thru our Dads, but with one in particular your mother’s legacy lives on in my family. To this day, the recipe actually titled “Reta’s Meatballs”, is the no-fail, go-to, good for entertaining, always have in the freezer dish we have always used and will continue to use, now with an added thought of a life well lived.
Condolences, again to you “kids” and your families.
