With profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of our dear sweet mamma/nonna, Rita Basile, on Tuesday, September 8th, 2020. Born September 16th, 1939 in Noto, Sicily,Italy. She was one of five siblings born to Corrado Leandri and Carmela Cavarra. Rita and her late husband, Giuseppe, immigrated to Canada through Pier 21 in 1965 with their eldest daughter Francesca(Franca). Rita’s passion was being a devoted wife to Giuseppe and caring for her four daughters. Her nurturing nature made her a second special mom to the many children that she cared for over the years. She loved to cook and always shared her wonderful meals, esp.,her famous spaghetti and her pizza, with her Elm street family of many years. The Basile’s were famous for their summer backyard parties and their New Years Eve parties where the homemade wine was flowing freely. Mom missed her homeland dearly and made a point to take family trips to Sicily as often as possible. It was important to her that we knew our families and her wonderful Italian culture. Mom and dad will always be remembered for walking hand in hand wherever they went. We miss you dearly, you are forever loved. Rita was predeceased by her husband Giuseppe. She is survived by her daughters,Franca(Mike),Carmela(Joe),Tina(Claudio),Josie(Derek) and her precious cat “Mumu”; seven grandchildren, Kyle, Kathleen, Santina, Massimo, Stefano, Michele, and Isabella; five great grandchildren; and her lifelong friend Janis, all of Halifax; and many nieces and nephews in Sicily. Visitations will be held from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, Tuesday September 15 in JA Snow Funeral Home, Lacewood Dr., Hfx. A private family service(due to Covid 19 restrictions) will be held on Wednesday, September 16th at St.Theresa’s church, Hfx. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation. Online condolences may be sent by visiting JASnowFuneralHome.com

I was so very sorry to hear of Rita’s passing. She was the greatest neighbour to have growing up and always met us with a smile and conversation. I remember fondly going to the Italian festival and seeing Rita and Joe and having them show us all sorts of delicious food. She will be missed greatly. Thinking of you all.

Dear Franca, Tina, Carmella, Josie and families,
So sorry for your loss. Your mamma was such a sweet and kind lady. I remember very well seeing your parents walking hand in hand in the neighborhood. They always stopped for a friendly hello. Now your mamma and papa are walking hand in hand again.
