Mom has gone to join Dad and finish those last few hands of cribbage where she was about to skunk him before they were interrupted almost a decade ago.
She wore her X-ring with pride having graduated from St. Francis Xavier University (BSc) in 1950. Carmel was a proud member of the Our Lady of Fatima CWL, and she served on the CB County School Board. For twenty years Mom volunteered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, although what she did best was raise her family and welcome our friends and extended family into her home.
She is predeceased by her husband JG ‘Jim’ MacDonald, her parents Catherine ‘Kate Mary’ and John Joseph Gillis, and her siblings David, Peggy, and Florence. She is survived by her children Jim (Kathleen Naylor), Brenda (Jim Lauzier), Michael, Bruce (Sheila Pullen), Peter (Oralee Hawley), Andrew (Tania Balice), 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Fatima Drive was home. A celebration of life will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 11 am; with a reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will be in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Sydney River.
The family would like to express our sincerest gratitude to the staff at Melville Lodge in Halifax, the doctors and nursing staff in 3A at the CB Regional Hospital, VON, CB County Homemakers, and the EHS paramedics who came to her aid and provided such compassionate care for our mother.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Street Connection Halifax, Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
