Roberta Carolyn Lutes

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Roberta Carolyn (Cummings) Lutes, 79, of Lower Sackville, NS at Maplestone Nursing Home on Sept. 22, 2020 of complications from Alzheimer’s. Carolyn was the daughter of the late Robert and Emma (Brace) Cummings, formerly of Springhill, NS.

Carolyn grew up in Springhill, surrounded by family. She attended Normal School in Truro, NS. She met her husband John Robert Lutes, while carpooling to Halifax where she began her teaching career.

Carolyn and John built their home in Lower Sackville where they raised their family together. The daughter of a coal miner, Carolyn was strong willed, loving and gentle. She continued to teach and study as her children grew, influencing all of them to become kind and hardworking individuals.

Carolyn was a great teacher and role model for many students. She was well respected in her profession and taught for many years at Sackville High School, becoming head of the math department and developing the Provincial Math 10 and Pre-Calculus 12 correspondence courses. She retired in 1994. Carolyn was a dedicated mother, and when not working, studying or taking care of her own immediate family, she especially loved to spend time with her “first cousins” , a group of fun-loving women. Her laughter will be remembered by all.

Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, and spouse, John Robert Lutes. She will be sadly missed by her children, Deborah (Victor) Cormier, Peter (Donna) Lutes, Nancy (Lutes) Cassidy, and Laurelea (Joel) DeAngelo. Grandchildren Justin (Shannon Eiriksson), Samantha (Joseph d’Entrement), Bruce, Katherine, and Emma. Great-Grandchildren Madeline and Jaxon. And all of her cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. Visitation will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm on Friday, September 25th with a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, September 26th at 10am. The committal service will follow at 3pm at Leamington Cemetery, Cumberland County.
