With profound sadness, we announce that Sadie passed away peacefully at Melville Lodge Care Center, Halifax on August 25, 2016. Born in Halifax, January 18, 1926, she was the youngest daughter of the late Caroline (Hubley) and Angus McMullen.
Prior to her marriage in 1946 to Howard Edward Smith, she worked at Eaton’s department store and Moir’s chocolate factory. During her marriage, she assisted Howard in his management of the Port Hawkesbury Motel in the 1960’s and took on various catering jobs. Sadie was a homemaker, a loving wife, and devoted mother to daughters, Donna (Wayne) Comeau and Denise (Colin Davey).
Sadie was happiest when spending time with family and friends and enjoying activities like a good game of cards. She and Howard enjoyed camping at Sherwood Forest Camping Park for 40 years. Whatever the gathering, she always ensured there was delicious food, lovingly prepared and artfully presented.
A woman of strong faith, she was a life-long member of Emmanuel Anglican Church, where she taught Sunday School and together with her late sister Olive, ran the food bank for many years. Sadie was a person of kind and gentle disposition, a selfless person who always put others first. A diagnosis with Alzheimer’s a decade ago could not rob her of her sweet and loving ways. She was one to constantly be telling the staff at Melville that she loved them or that they were beautiful, and her last days were filled with her expressions of love for her family and her faith in God.
In addition to her parents, Sadie was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Oakley, Olive Covey and Mamie Hamm and their spouses, John, Frank and Russell, and her husband of 67 years, Howard.
She is survived by her two daughters; grandchildren, Wayne (Lori) Comeau, Francesca Rhodes and Olivia Rhodes, and great-granddaughter, Rebecca Comeau; brother-in-law, Gerald Wagner, several nephews and nieces.
The family wish to thank the staff at Melville Lodge for their care of Sadie, as well as her roommate Lorna Marriott for her companionship and friendship. For those who visited Sadie since Howard’s passing in 2013, we are truly grateful, and particularly to niece Velda Roome for her care and attentiveness.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Tuesday, September 6th at 2 PM in Emmanuel Anglican Church, 322 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, with reception to follow in the church hall and burial in Emmanuel Church cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive.
