It is with profound sadness and deep love that we announce the passing of Sarah Jane Mitchell, a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, whose strength and love were the foundation of her family. Sarah was the first daughter of Anne-Marie and James William Mitchell, and from the very beginning, she carried a quiet resilience and sense of responsibility that would define her life.
Family was everything to Sarah. After the passing of her parents, she selflessly stepped into the role of caretaker and protector, becoming a guiding force and a mother figure to her siblings. Most recently, she stood faithfully beside her youngest brother, James William Mitchell, throughout his battle with meningitis, remaining by his side every step of the way. She was predeceased by her brother James, a loss that deeply affected her, but one she faced with the same courage and love she gave to all she held dear. We will never forget her strength.
Sarah leaves behind her beloved family: her sister Mary Sorra (Martin) and her children Brooke, (Laken, Myah and Ben) and Erin (Morgan), ; and her brother Kenneth Mitchell (Alida) and their children Mackenzie, (Olivia) Carter and Anika. She adored her nieces and nephews, their children, and their friends, finding her greatest joy in time spent together — laughing, sharing stories, and simply being present. To Sarah, family extended far beyond blood, and her home and heart were always open.
Sarah also built deep, meaningful friendships throughout her life and touched countless people in ways both big and small. She had a rare gift for connection — making others feel seen, heard, and supported. Her friendships were grounded in loyalty, honesty, and laughter, and she showed up for her friends with the same fierce devotion she gave to her family. The impact she had on those who knew her is immeasurable, and her presence will be deeply missed by the many lives she shaped.
She was a strong woman in every sense of the word — independent, resilient, and unapologetically herself. Sarah didn’t take much shit from anyone, but it was only because she loved deeply and expected honesty and kindness in return. Her laughter was contagious, her wit sharp, and her spirit unforgettable.
Sarah carried a deep love of travel and a natural curiosity for the world, always drawn to what lay beyond the horizon. From the bright energy of New York to the quiet beauty of the Swiss Alps, from Alaska to Italy and Sable Island, she collected experiences the way others collect souvenirs. She delighted in adventure — watching whales rise from the water, climbing into a shark cage without hesitation, and greeting every new place with excitement, courage, and a grin that said she was exactly where she was meant to be. She cherished the simple pleasures of life: good wine, good food, great conversation, and even better laughter. She believed in living fully, loving fiercely, and always showing up for the people who mattered most — and she did exactly that, every single day.
Sarah Jane Mitchell leaves behind a family forever changed by her absence, but forever strengthened by her love. Her legacy lives on in the lives she nurtured, the bonds she protected, and the memories she created. She will be deeply missed, endlessly loved, and never forgotten. May she rest in eternal peace.
In keeping with Sarah’s wishes, there will be no formal service. She would much rather have you raise a glass of good wine, share a great meal, and laugh with friends than sit through anything too serious. That’s how she lived, and that’s how she’d want to be remembered. For those who wish to honour her in another way, donations in her memory may be made to organizations close to her heart, including the Nova Scotia Nature Trust or the St. Mary’s River Association.
Hug your Family!
