

Born and educated in Halifax, Shirley was a graduate of Queen Elizabeth High School. In 1976 she returned to school and graduated from the Yarmouth Regional Hospital School of Nursing in 1978. Following graduation, she was employed in the Orthopaedic Department of the Victoria General Hospital where she became involved in both the Nova Scotia and Canadian Orthopaedic Associations. She served in a number of positions on the NS Executive and was Co-Chairman of the National Convention held in Halifax. As well, she served for eight years on the National Executive and was the first person awarded an honorary membership in the National Association. In 1989, She moved to Bridgewater and was employed on the surgery unit of the South Shore Regional Hospital. Eventually she settled on a small hobby farm in Pinehurst, Lunenburg County where, after retirement, she was able to devote her time to her animals and her gardens.
She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth, Halifax, Sheila, Riverport and Heather, Montreal and her son Frederick, Pinehurst. Also surviving are grandchildren Lana (Kursat), Ottawa, Natasha (Michael), Halifax, Nicholas, Toronto, and Willow, Montreal and great grandchildren Maximus and Alexandra, Halifax. She was predeceased by her parents Marion (Warner) and Daniel Day. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Shirey’s life will be announced at a later date.
