Born in Pictou, NS and raised in Tatamagouche, NS, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Jessie Chambers. She spent her early years working hard on the family farm and focusing on school and excelling at sports, winning many regional and provincial level events. Schooling eventually took her to Halifax where she graduated from Teachers College, Dalhousie and St Marys with a Masters degree in Education. Her love for children led her to be a Primary to grade 4 teacher for 32 years. Post-retirement, Shirley worked at Sears, then at Costco for almost 25 years, where she worked up until 2023 and loved interacting with the many people she got to know.
Shirley was an incredibly social person. She loved her friends, family, and was extremely loyal and thoughtful. Shirley would always call on birthdays, anniversaries, career achievements and any lifetime event where a celebratory call would be appreciated. She was selfless, volunteering for many organizations, while also attending many social events across the city. She was a member of the Mayflower curling club for 20 years. She was a huge fan of Elvis, and she was able to fulfill her lifetime dream of going to Graceland with her family.
Shirley was widowed to Jack (John) Martin and predeceased by her brother Perry. Shirley is survived by her brothers Robert (Bob) of Newport Beach, California, George of New Hope, Ontario, her son John, and wife Ange of Toronto, ON, and daughter Karen and husband Andy of Halifax, NS. Shirley's pride and joy were her 4 grandchildren who lovingly knew her as "Nannie". Avery and Jack Martin, Sadie and Violet Smith all knew "Nannie" as a loving, caring, and dedicated Grandmother who never stopped teaching. Shirley was always there for her family and friends, loved to laugh and played the piano in a way only Shirley could do.
To celebrate Shirley, the family will be holding a celebration of life in the Summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Feed NS in her honour..
