It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sidney Tudor Fetterly on October 10 after a long and courageous struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Oakville, Ontario, the daughter of Walter Norwood Moorhouse and Helen Tudor Moorhouse. She went to high school in Oakville before attending and graduating from St. Hilda's College at the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts. In May 1947, she married Douglas Johnson in Oakville before they moved to Halifax. She worked in the library of the Chronicle-Herald after they arrived. While raising two children, she went back to university to complete a Master’s of Social Work which she obtained from the University of King’s College. She went on to work with the then Department of Public Welfare, and later, with the Maritime School of Social Work.
Following the death of Douglas Johnson in February 1978, she married Allan Fetterly on June 7, 1980. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Church where she helped to establish the UCW (United Church Women) in 1962 for which she was recognized in 2012 along with nine other women. She also belonged to many other community organizations such as the Junior League of Halifax, the YWCA, the Waegwaltic Club of Halifax, the Commercial Club of Halifax, and Ashburn Golf Club. She and Allan volunteered a great deal of their time to Meals on Wheels. She had many other interests as well such as gardening, reading, golf, swimming, bowling, and bridge. She will be remembered as a kind and generous person who loved to be with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband (Allan), her children, Ian Johnson (Olga Milosevich) of Halifax and Meg Johnson (Danny Robichaud) of Halifax, and her step-children, Judy McFetridge-Durdle (Fred Durdle) of Tallahassee, Florida, Chris Woodbury (Frank Woodbury) of Waverly, and Tom Fetterly (Susan Harris) of Summerside, PEI. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren (James, Adam, Sara, Emilie, Jennifer, Matthew, Mark, Keltie, Jane, Allison, Jonathon, David, Jenni, and Natasha), and several great-grandchildren (Allen, Jakub, Piper, Beckett, Dylan, and Justin). She was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother Peter, and her husband Douglas.
A memorial service and celebration of Sidney’s life will be held on Friday, October 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Anglican Church, 321 Main Avenue, in Halifax. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia, Saint Andrew’s United Church, Brunswick Street Mission, Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home, and Phoenix House. The family wishes to thank the many healthcare providers and caregivers who looked after Sid, especially the 6th floor staff at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home and the patient attendants with Bayshore Home Health for their amazing care and support.
