LeRoy, Simone Augustine “Monette” (née Charlet) – Age 90, Halifax, passed away peacefully November 10, 2018, in the company of loving family, friends and caregivers. Born on January 23, 1928, in Paris, France, Monette was predeceased by her husband and best friend of 62 years, James Charles LeRoy. She is survived by their family in Halifax, including daughters, Dominique (Jean) Ténière and Catherine LeRoy; son, Patrick-James LeRoy; grandsons, Paul (Jennifer) and René (Noelle); and great-grandchildren, Lauren, David and Caroline.
Mum was orphaned at the age of 14 at the height of the war. She started anew in northern France, where she was raised by her beloved Aunt Elisabeth Chevalier. Mum’s inner strength, courage, discipline, hard work and the ability to re-invent herself served her well throughout her life. When the war ended, the austerity continued. Against this backdrop, Mum established a career in banking and became a respected bookkeeper in her community. While walking with a friend in Fourmies’ famed town park “Les Étangs des Moines”, Mum had her chance encounter with Dad – she, at 18 the epitome of a beautiful, fashionable and sophisticated Parisian woman, and he at 19 the charming, brash and dapper “Fourmiesien.”
Her sensibilities and intelligence were tempered by a warm heart and a sharp sense of humour. The stage was set, and they married within a year, in 1947. The arrival of Dominique in 1948 made the happy couple a family. Seeking greater opportunities and a better life, the family moved from France to Halifax in 1952. Dad preceded Mum and Dominique and sent for them to join him in Canada once he secured work and a home.
Many wonderful memories over the years revolve around her meals. In our opinion, Mum’s near Michelin four-star cooking was second to none. She fed everybody: family, friends, Gyros and the neighborhood kids. She did this while maintaining two households; Jollimore and the summer house in Marie Joseph. Her compassion and love for others, indefatigable work ethic and spirit were astounding.
Her smile was contagious and the twinkle in her eye reflected a life well-lived. We valued her feistiness, independent view, sharp sense of humor and forthright view of the world, delivered in that inimitably sweet French accent that could melt the coldest heart. We will miss her presence, strength, wisdom and love; as well as her warm smile, kisses and prodigious hugs – whether requested or volunteered. Mum maintained her dignity through declining health towards the end of her life. A special thank you goes out to Mum’s care workers at Northwood, the VON and the Palliative Care Service for helping her and ensuring comfort. We will be forever grateful for Cathy’s tireless and selfless efforts in supporting our Mum full-time at home. Cathy, Mum’s life was enriched because of your care and dedication.
Visitation Friday, November 16, from 5-8 pm at JA Snow Funeral Home, with Funeral Service to follow on Saturday, November 17 at 1:00 pm, also at JA Snow Funeral Home. The family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
