ABRAHAM, Sophy (Manimalethu) - With deep sorrow, we announce that Sophy Abraham (Manimalethu), 80, passed away peacefully at the VG Hospital with family by her side on April 9th 2012. Sophy was born in April of 1931 in Kottayam, Kerala State in India. She was the daughter of the late Thotungal Cherrian, and Mariama Cherrian. She received her medical degree from Calcutta Medical School in 1957. Sophy was the wife of the late Abraham Manimalethu (d.1973). She moved to Ethiopia where she worked at the Menelik Hospital in Addis Ababa. The family moved to Halifax in 1968. Sophy was employed as a general practitioner at the Nova Scotia Hospital where she worked for over 25 years prior to retirement. After this, she enjoyed travelling and spending time with her family in Kerala and with friends everywhere.
Sophy held her family in highest importance and additionally, her genuine nature, affable character and incredible generosity and kindness allowed her to make strong enduring friendships. Sophy made her contribution to the world through her constant provision of help and support to anyone who she came in touch with.
She enjoyed travelling, reading, and had a tremendous love for music, movies and food particularly from Kerala.
Sophy is survived by her daughter Anila (Manoj) Punnoose-Pachikara, Whitby, ON; and her two sons; Bobby (Natalie) Abraham, Bedford, NS and Cherrie (Rosalie) Abraham, Montreal, QC. as well as her 7 loving grandchildren.
We would like to thank all her great friends and family for their wonderful support. We acknowledge the vigilant and enduring care and compassion of the staff of 5A at the VGH. They have proven that we do have angels on this earth. We also thank the team of Doctors who have taken such great care of our mother but in particular we thank Dr. Katharina Kieser for her guidance, compassion and wonderful bedside manner in these last few weeks as well as Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Leighton and Dr. T.N. Bhargava for their tremendous care over the past years. All these people allowed Sophy to be comfortable through her illnesses. We are comforted knowing that our mother is at peace and at home with her saviour, Jesus.

According to our mother's wishes, there will be no visitation. Arrangements entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax (902) 455-0531. The funeral service will be held at St Ignatius Church, 5 Bedford St. (off Bedford Highway) on Saturday April 14 at 10:00 am with reception to follow.
