It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father Stavros (Steve) Tsoulouhas. Stavros was born in Nea Hora, Kastri Kynourias, Greece, on February 19, 1941, to Kostandenos and Panagiota Tsoulouhas.
Stavros immigrated to Canada in 1957 where his first stop was Alberta. He worked diligently with his uncle and, over time, he was able to bring his sister Joanne and then Matina to Canada. Eventually they all relocated and settled in Halifax.
Stavros worked at the Lord Nelson Hotel as a cook for several years and then branched off and purchased the Hilltop Grocery and Lunch Counter, which he ran for over twenty years with his sister Joanne.
The light of his life were his three children, Kosta, Panagiota and Victoria Marina. Throughout his life, Stavros valued time with his children, whether it be outside in nature, or telling stories at family dinners. His children have fond memories of spending Saturday afternoons making lunch with their father at the Olympic Confectionary. As they grew older and moved away, he always kept track of their schedules, knowing when to call to check in with them in the morning, and again at the end of their days, wanting to know all of their stories. More recently, he also loved his daily conversations with his grandson, Michael, hearing about his daily school adventures.
Stavros was the consummate Mr. “Fix-it.” There wasn’t anything that he did not attempt to repair. His collection of versatile tools enabled him to repair just about anything brought to him. He was also a collector of many fine treasures that he picked up on his travels and with great speed he would arrive home to begin tinkering with his new findings. He had a huge passion for his plants and gardening, particularly his tomatoes.
He loved his time with his ‘Grand-doggies”, Kelsie, Jersey & Smores, saying ‘Come to Grandpa” and then over-feed them with treats. He also looked forward to going to his son’s place to help him bake and whatever he deemed necessary to do in the kitchen.
Stavros was patient, kind, gentle and caring; his smile was always heartfelt. He continually reinforced to his children the importance of being respectful and kind towards others.
He is survived by his beloved children Kosta, Panagiota and Victoria Marina; his loving sisters Joanne Karmas, Matina Tsoulouhas; brother George Tsoulouchas (Maria); cousins Charlie (Maria) Tsuluhas, Koula Rouvalis; nephews, Christos Karmas (Heather Michael), Kostandenos Karmas, Yianni Tsoulouchas (Popi), niece Effie Rumbolt (Lorne), Maria Rouvalis (Wendell Thomas), Peter Rouvalis (Evangeline), his adored grandson Michael Allain, grand nephews George and Dimitri Rumbolt, several other cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Kostandenos and Panagiota, his brother-in-law George (Joanne) and nephew, Kostandenos.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 16, 6:00-8:30 p.m. at JA Snows Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 17 at 1:00 p.m. at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 1146 Purcell’s Cove Road. Father Theodore Efthimiadis will be officiating.
