

Passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2014, at the DGH surrounded by his loving wife of 25 years, Marlane, and his family. Born in Westfield Queens County, Nova Scotia, to Joshua and Phyllis Selig (Mansfield). He is survived by his wife, Marlane; daughter, Kim Morash (David) and grandson, Cole, Lower Sackville; step-daughter, Gail Naugle and granddaughter, Jordan, Lawrencetown; step-son, Sgt. Charles Naugle (Marjorie) and grandsons, Logan and Connor of Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. Stephen is also survived by brothers, Walter and Larry; sister, Joanne Conrad (Alfred), Milton, N.S. Stephen was predeceased by his father, Joshua Selig; mother, Phyllis Mansfield of Bridgewater; sister, Beverly Bommarito of Attica, Michigan; brother, Junior Mansfield of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Stephen was also predeceased by the greatest Foster Parents who had to be two Angels from heaven above, Blanche Chemist and Alfreda Croft, Liverpool, Nova Scotia, and several other foster parents after Mom Chemist died of cancer.
It was Stephen’s dream to become a policeman and all the things mom and Nana instilled in all of us children made our dreams come true. Stephen started police work at the age of 16 and finished high school while being one of the local town police. When he graduated from school he became the town police officer in Shelburne for a year and then transferred back to Liverpool Town Police for 6 years. In 1968, Stephen joined the Halifax Police Department. He walked the beats, worked the patrol cars, and became a motorcycle police officer. Stephen worked in the Detective Division, the Criminal Intelligence Section, and with the RCMP for three years. The highlight of his career was working in Los Angeles with the LA County Sherriff’s Office and the LAPD.
Stephen’s love for children got him involved in many activities, founding the first chapter of the Lower Sackville Jaycees, serving as their first president. He helped get a children’s park built in a green area on Howland Drive, Prince Street area in the 1970s. Every year he organized the Santa Claus Parade for the children in his area, involving the local RCMP, along with the decorating and lighting of a large Christmas tree in Howland Court. For 45 years, Stephen took great joy in playing Santa Claus for children and Senior Citizens since the age of 16. It was the highlight of every Christmas. Stephen also served on the St.Francis by the Lakes Church Council in Lower Sackville as well as on the Board of Directors for the Preston riding where he made many wonderful friends. He is also predeceased by his special friends, Dolly and Max, his toy poodles he loved so much and were his very close companions in his life. He loved all animals, and over many years took in many stray cats and dogs. The true love of his life was his beautiful wife Marlane and they enjoyed travelling, seeing the beauty of nature everywhere they went. They both loved gardening and the beauty of their gardens were seen by many.
Cremation has been completed under the direction of J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax (902-455-0531). Visitation will be at J.A Snow Funeral Home on Sunday, December 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service at Saint Barnabus Holy Anglican Church will be held Monday, Dec 15 at 10am
