

Ted Kwai Yeu Tam of Halifax passed away at home on November 2, 2015, at the age of 68. Ted was born in Canton, China in 1947 and moved to Hong Kong with his parents when he was nine years old. The eldest son of four siblings, he worked in his father’s jewellery store after graduating from high school. In 1967, Ted left Hong Kong for Canada, completing a diploma in engineering at Saint Dunstan's University in Charlottetown, PEI. Throughout his life, Ted continued to keep close ties with the Island and with the University of PEI, and was the recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008.
From PEI, Ted moved to Halifax and obtained his Bachelor of Civil Engineering from NS Technical College in 1971. During his early years in Halifax he met Janet. Ted and Janet married in 1974 and have two children - Patricia and Edward.
Ted’s career spanned 39 years in municipal engineering, starting with Halifax County in 1971 and retiring from HRM on April 1, 2010 as the Project Manager of the Harbour Solutions Project. During his career he also worked as a design engineer and Assistant Director of Public Works.
In retirement Ted raised two lovebirds, tended to countless plants both indoors and out, and traveled with family and friends. He loved photography, marine animals, and especially enjoyed snorkeling with turtles and tropical fish.
Ted’s kindness and generosity in life will be well remembered by his mother, Ching Yin Tam; wife, Janet; daughter, Patricia; son, Edward (Joanne); grandson, Liam; sister, Yvonne Shen (Charles); sister, Winnie Ng (Joseph); and brother, Peter Tam (Theresa).
Visitation will take place 3-6 pm Saturday, Nov 7, 2015, at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. Private family service at a later date. Ted’s wish was that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
