Terrence Michael Punch

PUNCH, Terrence Michael, CM

Terrence Michael Punch died on April 11, 2017. He was a son of the late Michael and Edythe (Little) Punch of Halifax, and father of the late Jill and Sara Punch.

He is survived by his loving wife Pamela Beaulieu, his beloved son Sean (Bonnie), Montreal, and caring sister Carolyn Smedley of Halifax.

He was a retired educator, and active in history and genealogy circles. He was a regular columnist, book reviewer, and author of several books in his fields of interest. He was a regular guest of CBC Maritime Noon for many years. Details of these and his other activities may be found in recent editions of “Who’s Who in Canada”.

Terry wished to thank his family for their love and support over many years, and his many friends and colleagues who rallied around during his fight with cancer. Without those prayers and favours, the struggle would have been unbearable.

His remains have been cremated. A memorial service will be held at J. A. Snow Funeral Home on Lacewood Drive on Sunday, April 23 at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in his memory to Feed Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.

During a recent visit to the hospital in Lunenburg, I happened upon an article in the 2013 issue of Saltscapes by Dr.Punch, and dabbling in family genealogy I was excited to read his comments. This week I looked through the magazines hoping to find that issue again...and there it was and encouraged to keep it ! On returning home I decided to look Dr.Punch up and was deeply sadden to read of his passing this past April.

Dear Pam, I was saddened to learn of Terry's passing. He was a brilliant man. I enjoyed listening to him on CBC radio, and reading his articles. I know it has been a while since we last saw one another, but I wanted you to know I am thinking about you and your family during this difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear of Terry's passing.
He was a hugely popular and interesting guest on the CBC Radio phone in program Maritime Noon. It was difficult to keep up with all the calls from listeners around the Maritimes who wanted to talk with him about their names. I know because I handled all the calls. It was always very busy and lively. Terry's knowledge of genealogy was infectious.
My sincere condolences to Pam and his family. Sue Dexter, Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.

Pam and Family,
I will always treasure the years I spent teaching with Terry at St. Patrick's High. He was a true gentleman and a kind and thoughtful person. His thirst for knowledge and his willingness to share what he knew with others made him a favourite of students and staff.
I am sorry to miss the celebration of his life as I am out of the country. Please know that you, Terry and family are in my prayers.

Though I do not know him personally, I mourn his passing. Sincere condolences to the family. Just yesterday I was trying to find a means of contacting him re printing a few of his copyrighted pages and my search led me to CBC who were kind enough to forward his obituary.
